Subject field(s)
  • Soil Science
  • Mineralogy
DEF

A general name for a group of three-layer, mica-like clay minerals that are widely distributed in argillaceous sediments (especially in marine shales and in soils derived from them).

OBS

The relation of illite to similar or identical material known variously as hydromica, hydrous mica, hydromuscovite, and hydrated mica group is not clearly established.

OBS

hydromica: The term is practically synonymous with illite.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Petrography
OBS

At the base of the normal sedimentary series, in its most common positive development, are commonly conglomerate and sandstone. These detrital deposits still have rather frequently a continental character, such as siderolithic sandstones with kaolinite, red arkosic sandstones with a dominance of illite, and the various piedmont complexes.... If one examines a great number of these series, it is frequently seen that the base level of the waters rises and the deposits take on little by little a marine facies.

OBS
