In opposition to Chomsky, who(as I noted) pays little attention to how his derivations might be realized by an individual speaker operating under "real-world" constraints, Bresnan and her colleagues have fashioned a perspective designed to illuminate how an individual will perceive or produce language. In her lexical-functional theory, there is no transformational component. The information traditionally embedded in the syntactic components is now placed in the individual' s lexicon-one's knowledge of specific words. Lexical-functional grammar provides each sentence with two structures : a constituent structure, which is similar to a surface structure(or phrase-marker tree) in the standard theory of Chomsky; and a functional structure, which includes all the grammatical relations relevant to the semantic interpretation of the sentence. The functional structure is generated by annotated phrase-structure rules working in conjunction with lexical entries for the various morphemes in a sentence. 1, record 1, English, - lexical%2Dfunctional%20theory

The wideband Delphi method involves greater interaction and more communication between participants than the classic Delphi approach. Group discussion occurs between rounds in which participants illuminate their statements and opinions. Traditional Delphi studies avoid face-to-face meetings to elicit genuine opinions and anonymous input. Instead of having the beam sweep along in a continuous fashion, we triggered the TR [transformer-rectifier] modules to electronically wiggle the beam back and forth, perpendicular to the direction of flight. In the radar world, we call this ScanSAR (Scanning Synthetic Aperture Radar), because the beam scans across swath the way an electron beam sweeps across the face of a cathode-ray tube to make a television picture. You point the beam at one spot on the ground for about a tenth of a second, then zip it over to another place and point it there for a while, then you zip it over to a third place, then a fourth. By looking at four such subspots, you can sweep out a much wider swath of data. 3, record 30, English, - scanning%20synthetic%20aperture%20radar

... imaging radar systems are active sensors that "illuminate" surface features with broadcast microwave energy and record a returned signal. Most imaging radar systems produce microwaves with wavelengths between 1 cm and 1 meter, longer than the wavelengths used in weather radar to detect rain and snow. These longer wavelength microwave signals propagate through the atmosphere and clouds with almost no interaction or weakening. As a result imaging radar systems can be used to map surface features day or night and in almost any weather conditions. These characteristics make radar imaging especially useful in tropical and polar regions where persistent cloud cover hampers optical remote sensing efforts. 2, record 31, English, - surface%20feature

The three common SAR acquisition modes... : Stripmap SAR, Spotlight SAR, and ScanSAR.... A Spotlight SAR steers the antenna beam to continuously illuminate a certain region on ground much longer than in the Stripmap case [Carrara et al., 1995]. As a result, the azimuth bandwidth becomes larger, which hence may be exploited to increase the azimuth resolution.... It offers the possibility to measure different components of the surface current using only a single pass(in case of a spotlight single-pass interferometry configuration). To this purpose the total azimuth bandwidth is divided into different(e. g. two) non-overlapping parts which are processed separately with their individual optimum Doppler centroid values so that the resulting images represent observations from two different aspect angles. A spotlight system operated in that way provides data similar to a Dual-Beam ATI [Allied Telesyn International] configuration. 4, record 34, English, - spotlight%2Dmode

Axial lighting comes from very close to the subject-lens axis. A ring light(a flash that encircles the lens) yields such illumination. It is almost shadowless but does produce some modelling in surfaces closely parallel to the axis. Flat surfaces perpendicular to the axis may reflect light directly back into the lens. The ring light is useful for photographing details in depressions or crevices that are difficult to reach or illuminate with other types of lamps. 2, record 43, English, - axial%20lighting

Tracking tasks focus on motor activities as distinct from perceptual or cognitive activities to perform the task the subject aligns a marker with a target. The marker may be the subject's own finger or, more usually, a cursor or pointer operated using a control such as a joystick, handwheel or keyboard. The target may be a series of lights which illuminate in random order, or a moving line on a screen. Tracking tasks are often visual by may be auditory or tactile. Every tracking task is jointly controlled by the subject and the system and, whatever the configuration, data is gathered on the speed and accuracy of the subject's responses to changes in the status of the target. Tracking tasks are characterized in three ways : 1. pursuit vs compensatory tracking, 2. system-paced vs subject-paced tracking, 3. step vs continuous input tracking. 1, record 52, English, - tracking%20task

Uplighting is one of the most striking of all lighting effects, because the light direction is counter to the normal daylight experience. It is most often used to accent plants or other landscape features. This lends a glowing silhouette effect to the object since there is a high contrast between outline and horizontal surfaces. 2, record 55, English, - up%2Dlighting

Downlighting is not as unusual as uplighting because the eye is more accustomed to this condition. The primary feature is the ability to create texture patterns on the ground plane by directing the light through foliage or other overhead structures. It also provides a high contrast between upper and lower surfaces of foliage that can sometimes be used to good advantage. 2, record 56, English, - down%2Dlighting

Airport identification. Identifying airports is often a problem for the less experienced pilot, particularly when airports are close together. Even experienced airline pilots occasionally land at the wrong airport-with embarrassing results. Some small airports display the airport name on a taxiway or a hangar roof, and others display an identifier code instead of the airport name. Few airports illuminate displayed names or codes so that they are legible for identification purposes at night. 1, record 57, English, - airport%20identification
