... retromode imaging(RMI) is a noncontact and a noninvasive imaging method that relies on... confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopic technology. Briefly, there are two kinds of light returning back from the fundus once it is illuminated, a direct reflex and a scattered light.... RMI is performed by a scanning laser ophthalmoscope(SLO) working at an infrared wavelength, which creates a pseudo three-dimensional image with highly contrasting margins of retinal abnormalities(e. g., neurosensory detachments, retinal holes, retinoschisis and intraretinal cystic fluid). 5, record 1, English, - scanning%20laser%20ophthalmoscopy%20retromode%20imaging

Genesis of the scanning laser ophthalmoscope.... In the scanning device, the illumination is incident on a small spot of the fundus for a short time period, the illumination beam is displaced to the adjacent small spot, and this continues until the field of view of the fundus is covered. Simultaneously, with the spot of illumination, the scattered light is detected; the accumulation of all of the light from all of the illuminated spots forms the image of the fundus as seen on the display of the scanning laser ophthalmoscope. 7, record 2, English, - scanning%20laser%20ophthalmoscope

Scanning laser ophthalmoscopes produce high-contrast images even through narrow pupils. Using various color lasers, this method can [allow visualization of] particular structures of the retina noninvasively, i.e., without injection of a contrast agent. Multifocal ERGs(mfERGs) are obtained by stimulating the central 30° to 50° of the retina with a contiguous array of flickering hexagons. Each element is independently alternated between black(off) and white(illuminated) according to a pseudorandom binary order called the m-sequence. Multiple hexagons are simultaneously alternated, but the m-sequence determines that no pattern of simultaneous hexagon stimulation is repeated twice in the sequence. Cross-correlation techniques associate ERG activity with localized retinal areas and provide a topology(map) of the test field's retinal sensitivity. 6, record 3, English, - multifocal%20electroretinogram

Put simply, a solar eclipse is a shadow play between three actors : the Sun, the Moon, and the Earth. Illuminated by the Sun, the Moon casts a shadow out into space : a long, thin cone, stretching about 374, 000 km out into space, called the umbra. Anyone inside that umbral cone will see the Sun completely blocked out by the Moon. Surrounding the umbra, there is a zone where the Sun is only partly hidden : this is known as the penumbra. Extending out from the tip of the umbral cone is a part of the penumbra known as the antumbra, which comes into play during annular eclipses. 2, record 8, English, - antumbra

A quantum dot, also called a "qdot" or a "nanodot," is a semiconductor nanocrystal that is less or equal to 10 nm in size, and confines the motion of conduction band electrons in the three spatial directions. So, by definition, quantum dots are able to trap electrons. A given quantum dot contains a finite number of conduction band electrons typically in the range of 1 to 100. 6, record 10, Spanish, - punto%20cu%C3%A1ntico

synthetic aperture radar; SAR :[A] synthetic aperture radar(SAR) is a side-looking imaging radar usually operating on either an aircraft or a spacecraft. The radar transmits a series of short, coherent pulses to the ground producing a footprint whose size is inversely proportional to the antenna size, its aperture. Because the antenna size is generally small, the footprint is large and any particular target is illuminated by several hundred radar pulses. Intensive signal processing involving the detection of small Doppler shifts in the reflected signals from targets to the moving radar produces a high resolution image that is equivalent to one that would have been collected by a radar with a much larger aperture. 4, record 14, English, - C%2Dband%20synthetic%20aperture%20radar

Confocal microscopy. Unlike "normal" microscopy, only a spot of a minimum size in the specimen is illuminated in confocal microscopy. To enable an image to be formed from this, the specimen must be scanned. The image of the spot is directed through a pinhole stop in an intermediate image plane. As a result, only light from the focal plane can reach the detector(a photomultiplier). All other(out-of-focus) planes are blocked out. This results in an "optical section". The images are stored electronically and displayed on a monitor. A series of optical sections can be recorded by moving a motor a slight distance along the z-axis each time an image has been recorded, after which the next image is then also recorded. Such a z-series permits the electronic reconstruction of the three-dimensional structure using suitable computer programs. The procedure, which is restricted to incident-light techniques, has completely revolutionized fluorescence microscopy in biology in particular. 2, record 37, English, - confocal%20microscopy

Particles, emulsions and molecules in suspension undergo Brownian motion.... If the particles or molecules are illuminated with a laser, the intensity of the scattered light fluctuates at a rate that is dependent upon the size of the particles as smaller particles are "kicked" further by the solvent molecules and move more rapidly. Analysis of these intensity fluctuations yields the velocity of the Brownian motion and hence the particle size using the Stokes-Einstein relationship. 3, record 67, English, - dynamic%20light%20scattering

Cast shadows are most appropriate on large-scale 3D models viewed from low elevations. In these situations readers expect to see cast shadows based on their real world observations. Cast shadows generally look better with soft edges and low to moderate intensity(darkness). On small scale maps cast shadows can interfere with oblique hill shading, especially in steep-sided valleys where the shadows can fall on adjacent illuminated slopes. Floaters are entoptic images of opacities in the vitreous. Entoptic image is a visual perception that is produced by structures within the eye-in this case vitreous opacities. Patients complain of small specks or dots that can be seen against a bright background such as a diffusely illuminated wall or the blue sky. Sometimes fine dark lines in amorphous mass-like small branching twigs-are seen. These floaters move around and are also called ’muscae volitantes’ because they seem to dart about like flies as the eye is moved. 1, record 89, English, - vitreous%20floater

The vitreous is a jelly like substance which changes consistency as we age. This change causes the vitreous to separate from the retina. A... photoelectric planimeter... is particularly suited for the precise determination of leaf area for many western range species.... Most photoelectric planimeters follow the same basic design. Leaves are held in a horizontal position on a stage and illuminated from above with a defuse light source. The amount of light intercepted by these leaves is measured by a photoelectric sensor located below the stage. The components of such a devise are housed in a light-proof enclosure. 1, record 90, English, - photoelectric%20planimeter

In X-ray topography, a crystal is illuminated using a highly parallel monochromatic X-ray beam and the diffraction pattern is recorded using fine-grain film placed very close to the crystal. Under these illumination conditions, the diffraction from different points in the crystal is spatially resolved at the film, and the diffraction spots provide images of the crystal. Image contrast results from variations in the diffracted intensity due to variations in lattice orientation and spacing associated with crystal defects and strains. X-ray topography probes bulk crystal perfection with a spatial resolution of a few micrometers. 2, record 92, English, - topography

Cloud-to-ground [discharge.] ... Once a sufficiently high voltage difference exists for electrical breakdown to begin in the cloud, a streamer of electrons develops. This, in turn, can become a "stepped leader," which approaches the earth in a series of rapid steps ... The stepped leader produces an ionized channel (molecules in its path are stripped of electrons) and tends to follow a downward branching path. As soon as one of the branches is within five to 50 meters of the surface, another streamer advances upward to meet it along the path of least resistance (often through tall and pointed objects). Now an ionized path a few centimeters in diameter connects earth with cloud. Next, the "return stroke," which carries a surge of current, travels up the ionized channel, lighting up the paths taken by the stepped leader. 4, record 94, English, - channel

The main units of the AIC are : the focal plane assembly(FPA), equipped with a back-thinned illuminated CCD matrix and a front-end amplifier, provides the optical signal detection. A thermoelectric peltier cooler under the detector sets the operating point at-25°C ± 100 mK, the detection box(BD) which supplies the FPA with the necessary electrical signals to operate the CCD. It generates the clock waveforms from the VEU signals and filters the supplied voltage from the DSU, the video electronics unit(VEU) which processes the analog signal coming from the FPA, digitizes it on 12 bits before passing it on in serial processing to the science data processing subsystem(SDPSS). It also provides the DBs with the primary clock signal. The power conditioning of the VEU is located in the same unit, the detection supply unit(DSU) delivers relevant stabilized voltages to the 5 DUs and power to thermo-coolers from the main supply feeder of the instrument. 2, record 98, English, - analog%20imaging%20chain
