ILW [6 records]

Record 1 - external organization data 2011-10-03

English

Subject field(s)
  • Nuclear Waste Materials
  • Compartment - Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission
DEF

... wastes that are only slightly contaminated and can normally be transported without special precautions such as shielded containers. (This definition of low level waste is commonly used in Canada for classifying beta-gamma emitters...)

CONT

Low-level radioactive waste(LLW) is composed of a variety of substances that are generated by a large number of processes. Due to this heterogenous mixture, there is no universally accepted classification scheme. The following is used in this report :-Low-Level Waste(LLW)-requires no shielding and does not generate significant heat.-Intermediate-Level Waste(ILW) ;High-Level Waste(HLW).

CONT

The Task Force’s assessment of this problem led it to develop its own definition and classification system, based primarily on the specific activity and half-life of the materials involved. First, it defined low-level radioactive waste as being: all those radioactive wastes, other than spent fuel, arising from the mining, milling, refining or use of materials containing radionuclides. Second, it divided low-level wastes into four categories or classes ... based on the concentration of radioactivity ... of the waste material ...

OBS

Such wastes produce a dose rate of less than 100 millirem/hour at a distance of 30 cm from the waste.

Domaine(s)
  • Déchets nucléaires
  • Tiroir - Commission canadienne de sûreté nucléaire
DEF

[...] déchets [...] de 0 à 200 mCi/m³ [...]

CONT

Record 2 2011-02-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Nuclear Waste Materials
CONT

Intermediate-level waste contains higher amounts of radioactivity and some requires shielding. It typically comprises resins, chemical sludges and metal fuel cladding, as well as contaminated materials from reactor decommissioning. It may be solidified in concrete or bitumen for disposal. Generally short-lived waste (mainly from reactors) is buried in a shallow repository, but long-lived waste (from fuel reprocessing) will be disposed of deep underground.

CONT

Intermediate-Level Waste(ILW)-requires shielding and does not generate significant heat. ILW is generally grouped with LLW [low-level wastes], rather than HLW [high-level wastes], for purposes of this report.

OBS

The plural form "wastes" is very frequently used.

CONT

In Switzerland two types of repository are being considered for disposal of intermediate and LLW. Type Q are shallow rock caverns to be excavated within 100 m of the land surface and are designed to hold only LLW. Type B repositories would be caverns excavated at depths of several hundred metres and containing both LLW and ILW.

CONT

Reinforced Concrete Trenches - These are used to store the somewhat higher level miscellaneous reactor wastes which have been treated and placed in steel containers. The trenches are 3 m wide, 3 m deep and more than 40 m long with concrete walls and removable reinforced concrete lids.

CONT

Reinforced concrete trenches with waterproof tiling all around are used for most ILW containing short-lived radionuclides and limited amounts of alpha emitters.

OBS

... LLW [low-level waste] is defined as all the waste that is not classified as high-level waste(HLW), or uranium mine and mill tailings. According to the above definition LLW will also include intermediate level waste(ILW), i. e., waste that requires shielding but not cooling.

CONT

The first concept [for low-level waste disposal in a clay/till host medium of at least 15 m thickness] consists of trenches lined with circular concrete caissons. The trenches are 10 m wide and 107 m in length and are filled with 6 m of wastes capped by a structural roof plus mounded earth cover. Intermediate level wastes are placed in 3-m diameter augured boreholes of 8. 5 m depth. A temporary weather enclosure is used during the filling operations. The second concept consists of six concrete-lined tunnels... for LLW and augered boreholes for ILW.
