An important property insofar as drainage through fabrics is concerned is the porosity or size of opening of the fabric. This is most accurately determined by tests common to the area of quantitative metallography. Such devices as "image analyzers," which rapidly scan the specimen and give, by light reflection, the percentage of void to fiber, are ideal for this use. Most systems also have data storage capabilities which allow for scanning of a relatively large specimen and thereby obtain meaningful statistical data on the mean size of openings and the standard deviation or variance of these openings. 1, record 2, English, - image%20analyzer

3, record 2, French, - analyseur%20d%27image

Regarding material characterization, most work is centered around laboratory testing and adapting the many existing test methods for textiles to construction use tests.... An example [of new techniques] is Rollins work with an image analyzer to characterize fabric as to the size and shape of the openings and details of clogging or blinding of the fabrics. Crack propagation in fabrics is also being studied on a fracture mechanics basis, indicating that many tools common to other areas are being used in fabric problems. 1, record 3, English, - material%20characterization

2, record 3, French, - caract%C3%A9risation%20de%20textiles
