In computer graphics, a designated area of the screen that is flooded with a particular color.

A display screen must be erased before an image is generated and between images(frames) in an animation sequence. A screen may be erased to its natural "off" color(typically black or green), or it may be filled to a solid color such as white if elements of a different color will be generated. Lines and characters are often drawn in black on a white background to give the effect of pen on paper. This is achieved through the white erase, or "fill".

Time-swapping between the tasks, by a processor.

CONT

An alternative to multitasking. Here multiple tasks are loaded into computer memory, where you can switch between them with a keystroke. Only one task, the foreground task, is running at any time-all the background tasks remain in suspended animation until you switch to them. The advantage is that you can switch between them instantly, and while they are the foreground task, they run at full speed. However, each task must have a full memory image, so you must have lots of memory on your system. The new MS-DOS 5. 0 has a task-switcher in its shell.

... the Mac, through QuickTime, shrinks the video image to a small size(160 X 120 pixels) to reduce the amount of video data required for each frame of video.... QuickTime also provides users with a variety of compressors for specific types of files-still images, video, animation, and so on. These compressors allow you to reduce your QuickTime clips’ file size, which can get enormous(the average uncompressed file size of our 30-second test clip was 16 megabytes). The compressors employ spatial compression to reduce the file size of each individual frame and temporal compression to reduce the amount of data repeated across a group of frames.
