Genesis of the scanning laser ophthalmoscope.... In the scanning device, the illumination is incident on a small spot of the fundus for a short time period, the illumination beam is displaced to the adjacent small spot, and this continues until the field of view of the fundus is covered. Simultaneously, with the spot of illumination, the scattered light is detected; the accumulation of all of the light from all of the illuminated spots forms the image of the fundus as seen on the display of the scanning laser ophthalmoscope. 7, record 1, English, - scanning%20laser%20ophthalmoscope

Helical Acquisition... In this approach, image acquisition time is decreased significantly by connecting the tube voltage cables through a "slip ring, "a sliding contact mounted on the rotating gantry of the unit. With slip-ring technology, the X-ray tube rotates while the patient table moves without stopping. Hence, the patient is moved continuously through the gantry during the study, and the X-ray beam maps out a helical path in the patient... 3, record 6, English, - helical%20acquisition

Atomic-force microscopy is similar to scanning-tunneling microscopy(STM) in that it can image surfaces at atomic-scale resolution. The difference between AFM and STM is that AFM does not require that the sample be an electrically conducting material. Like STM, it uses an atomically-sharp tip that is brought very close to the surface. The tip will feel a chemical attraction or repulsion and will move up or down on its supporting cantilever. This movement is monitored by an optical laser beam as the tip is moved laterally across the surface. As in STM, rastering the tip across the surface produces a topographic map of the surface. 3, record 13, English, - atomic%20force%20microscopy

4, record 17, French, - microscope%20%C3%A0%20champ%20proche

In scanning electron microscopy(SEM), a fine probe of electrons with energies typically up to 40 keV [kiloelectron volts] is focused on a specimen, and scanned along a pattern of parallel lines. Various signals are generated as a result of the impact of the incident electrons, which are collected to form an image or to analyse the sample surface. These are mainly secondary electrons, with energies of a few tens of eV [electron volts], high-energy electrons backscattered from the primary beam and characteristic X-rays. 5, record 18, English, - scanning%20electron%20microscopy

Scanning transmission electron microscopy(STEM) combines the principles of transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy and can be performed on either type of instrument. Like TEM [transmission electron microscopy], STEM requires very thin samples and looks primarily at beam electrons transmitted by the sample. One of its principal advantages over TEM is in enabling the use of other signals that cannot be spatially correlated in TEM, including secondary electrons, scattered beam electrons, characteristic X-rays, and electron energy loss. Like SEM [scanning electron microscopy], the STEM technique scans a very finely focused beam of electrons across the sample in a raster pattern. Interactions between the beam electrons and sample atoms generate a serial signal stream, which is correlated with beam position to build a virtual image in which the signal level at any location in the sample is represented by the gray level at the corresponding location in the image. Its primary advantage over conventional SEM imaging is the improvement in spatial resolution. 3, record 21, English, - scanning%20transmission%20electron%20microscopy

A confocal laser scanning microscope is a light microscope having a dramatically higher axial resolution than a conventional microscope. In other words, a confocal microscope is capable of optical sectioning. This is accomplished by illuminating the specimen one point at a time with a focused laser beam and using an optical arrangement, where only the light originating from the focus can be detected. The image is formed by scanning the laser beam over the specimen and recording the image into computer memory. A three-dimensional view of the specimen can be reconstructed from a stack of such images taken at successive focal planes. 2, record 24, English, - axial%20resolution

In synthetic aperture radar(SAR) imaging, microwave pulses are transmitted by an antenna towards the Earth surface. The microwave energy scattered back to the spacecraft is measured. The SAR makes use of the radar principle to form an image by utilising the time delay of the backscattered signals. In real aperture radar imaging, the groud resolution is limited by the size of the microwave beam sent out from the antenna. Finer details on the ground can be resolved by using a narrower beam. The beam width is inversely proportional to the size of the antenna, i. e. the longer the antenna, the narrower the beam. 2, record 37, English, - radar%20pulse

2, record 37, French, - impulsion%20radar

The angle defined by the incident radar beam and the vertical (normal) to the intercepting surface. 3, record 39, English, - incidence%20angle
Record number: 39, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The incidence angle is commonly used to describe the angular relationship between the radar beam and the ground, surface layer or a target. A change of the radar illumination angle often affects the radar backscattering behaviour of a surface or target. The incidence angle changes across the radar image swath; it increases from near range to far range. In the case of satellite radar imagery, the change of incidence angle for flat terrain across the imaging swath tends to be rather small, usually on the order of several degrees. In the case of an inclined surface(slope), the local incidence angle is defined as the angle between the incident radar beam and a line that is normal to that surface. The local incidence angle determining, in part, the brightness, or image tone, for each picture element(pixel) and slope facet, is a key element in the prominent rendition of terrain features in radar imagery. 3, record 39, English, - incidence%20angle

"Precision Map Image" products have even greater positional accuracy than "Map Image" products. Ground Control Points (GCPs) as well as a map projection are used to spatially align the image. To order a "Precision Map Image" product, ground control points from a map or provided through Global Positional Satellite (GPS) technology are required. To further enhance the positional accuracy of the image, Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) can be used to correct terrain distortions. A DEM at sufficient detail will be needed to provide ortho-correction services. 2, record 42, English, - %5C%22Precision%20Map%20Image%5C%22%20product

RADARSAT ScanSAR Beam Modes : A ScanSAR beam mode is composed of either two, three, or four single beams. The sequence of beams is organized so that the data is collected from a larger area, than what can be collected using a single beam. The ability to "steer" the radar beam using different incidence angles increases the frequency of repeat coverage. For the ScanSAR beam modes, the radar backscatter decrease resulting from incidence angle differences within the image range should be considered before interpreting the image brightness of a specific target. In X-ray topography, a crystal is illuminated using a highly parallel monochromatic X-ray beam and the diffraction pattern is recorded using fine-grain film placed very close to the crystal. Under these illumination conditions, the diffraction from different points in the crystal is spatially resolved at the film, and the diffraction spots provide images of the crystal. Image contrast results from variations in the diffracted intensity due to variations in lattice orientation and spacing associated with crystal defects and strains. X-ray topography probes bulk crystal perfection with a spatial resolution of a few micrometers. 2, record 51, English, - topography

The Positron Microscope was designed and built to be a hybrid instrument capable of performing several types of positrons and electron microscopy. For both electrons and positrons the microscope can be run in one of two modes : magnifying mode in which particles leaving the target are focussed onto a CEMA plate assembly to form a magnified image and scanning mode in which the amplitude of a signal is recorded as a function of the position(and possibly energy) of the incident beam. As an electron microscope the instrument will be able to operate in both magnifying and scanning(SEM) modes. As a positron microscope, however, source considerations will limit its immediate use to magnifying mode, i. e. positron reemission microscopy. 2, record 65, English, - positron%20microscope
