A carrier file is a file that performs a function in its own right and does not appear to be anything other than what it seems, for example a photograph or a sound file might be used as a carrier file. Carrier files appear perfectly normal, they will display in image viewers or work in audio players, using the above examples. But they can also contain hidden information-other files and messages-that can be retrieved.

DEF

A process invented by the New York printer, Benjamin Day, for mechanically transferring a great variety of shaded tints and mottled patterns to line printing plates in order to give an image the appearance of a tone.

CONT

The original benday process... consists in applying inked patterns of different designs to an image carrier, such as a lithographic plate or photoengraving metal... In our time the original benday process is but rarely used. Its name, though, has not only survived but has even become a generic term for a variety of tint laying techniques... Very often [bendaying] has become part of art-and-copy preparation. Shading or tinting patterns are manufactured by several companies for this purpose. They can be used by commercial artists to provide certain tonal effects of a limited range.

DEF

[A] technology [which] provides for the direct transfer of the image from digital files to the image carrier(plate) of the press.

OBS

Many of the press settings, such as plate registration, ink flow, and cleanup are adjusted with digital information as well. Unlike a true digital press, which can vary the image on every printed sheet, the image cannot be varied during a press run on a direct imaging press.
