DEF

[The] process of assigning individual pixels of an image to categories, generally on the basis of spectral reflectance characteristics.

OBS

Digital image classification is the process of assigning a pixel(or groups of pixels) of remote sensing image to a land cover class. The objective is to classify each pixel into only one class(crisp or hard classification) or to associate the pixel with many classes(fuzzy or soft classification). The classification techniques may be categorized either on the basis of training process(supervised and unsupervised) or on the basis of theoretical model(parametric and non-parametric). Several classification algorithms(classifiers) have been developed under this categorization.

CONT

Hard classification results in one class/pixel [as opposed to] soft classification [that] results in multiple classes/pixel, with associated likelihoods for each class.

CONT

If the resolution of the image is sufficiently high(e. g. 1m or less), it may be that each pixel will represent only one type of land cover, and so we can make an accurate ’hard’ classification. However, for lower-resolution images-the kind that are more readily available for different places and for different times-each pixel is likely to represent a mix of different land-cover types. As a result, a hard classification will probably represent only a part of the pixel and will inaccurately describe the remainder of the area covered by that pixel.

Franklin and McDermid(1993) and Franklin et al.(1996) proposed an alternative technique : a geographic window, where dimensions of a moving kernel are customized and are determined by variogram range. The technique proved to be promising and has been applied to derive texture measures like the co-occurrence matrix for image classification as well as first and second order texture and semivariance moment texture(nugget, range, sill, slope, mean semivariance) for LAI [Leaf Area Index] estimation(Wulder et al. 1997).

CONT

CONT

The InSAR technique exploits the phase difference successive SAR observations and requires the information of an "interferogram" from two Single Look Complex (SLC) SAR images of the same scene acquired at different time.

CONT

Using the INSAR technique, it is possible to produce directly from SAR image data, detailed and accurate three-dimensional height maps of the Earth's surface topography. In addition, an extension of the basic technique, known as Differential INSAR(DINSAR), allows the detection of very small(centimetre-scale) motion of the land surface within an image. Furthermore, INSAR is emerging as a powerful tool for the detection of changes of land surface through the use of phase coherence. These possibilities open up many new potential applications of space-borne SAR data in the areas of cartography, volcanology, geomorphology, ice/glacial motion and land surface classification.

CONT
