L'observation courante indique que toute chaîne instrumentale dégrade les images. Cela se traduit par une atténuation de contrastes, une perte de résolution, un flou dans la perception des détails fins. Depuis les travaux de Fresnel et de Rayleigh, on sait que la dégradation introduite dans l'optique proprement dite est une conséquence directe des phénomènes de diffraction, en particulier celle de Frauenhoffer (diffraction à l'infini).
