SIAM is a technology that defies the current laws of imaging. It permits scientists to view images much smaller than the wavelength of light and approaching the atomic level, an achievement that has long been considered impossible according to the basic principles of classical optics. SIAM works by shining light through a thin sample onto an ultra-sharp, vibrating tip on the other side. The light scattering from the tip gets altered as the tip approaches within a nanometer from the sample surface, as it vibrates, due to the optical interaction with the local properties of the sample. An image is built up by recording the scattered light as the probe is scanned line by line. The scientists recorded the variations in the scattered light using a very sensitive device--an optical interferometer--which is capable of measuring modulations in light level corresponding to single photons. The incidence angle is commonly used to describe the angular relationship between the radar beam and the ground, surface layer or a target. A change of the radar illumination angle often affects the radar backscattering behaviour of a surface or target. The incidence angle changes across the radar image swath; it increases from near range to far range. In the case of satellite radar imagery, the change of incidence angle for flat terrain across the imaging swath tends to be rather small, usually on the order of several degrees. In the case of an inclined surface(slope), the local incidence angle is defined as the angle between the incident radar beam and a line that is normal to that surface. The Hénon attractor grows on the computer screen from a single point into a graceful boomerang shape. The image is produced by iterating a pair of simple functions, one of them having a nonlinear term, applied initially to some point in the plane specified by particular x-and y-coordinates. With each iteration, the attractor as a whole is stretched and folded, in much the same way that a baker kneads bread dough. Points that are initially close together get stretched apart, but are eventually folded back close together. All that's missing is the yeast. There is much that is strange about the Hémon attractor. For one thing, it appears to be the same regardless of the iteration's starting point.
