Atomic-force microscopy is similar to scanning-tunneling microscopy(STM) in that it can image surfaces at atomic-scale resolution. The difference between AFM and STM is that AFM does not require that the sample be an electrically conducting material. Like STM, it uses an atomically-sharp tip that is brought very close to the surface. The tip will feel a chemical attraction or repulsion and will move up or down on its supporting cantilever. This movement is monitored by an optical laser beam as the tip is moved laterally across the surface. As in STM, rastering the tip across the surface produces a topographic map of the surface.

La microscopie à force atomique (AFM : «atomic force microscopy») a été introduite en 1986 par G. Binnig, C.F. Quate et C. Gerber, comme une application du concept de microscope à effet tunnel (STM : «scanning tunneling microscope») [...] permettant l'étude de surfaces de matériaux isolants à l'échelle atomique. En combinant les principes du microscope à effet tunnel et du stylet profilométrique, les auteurs démontraient la possibilité d'imager, à l'air libre, la surface d'échantillons conducteurs ou non, avec une résolution latérale de 30 Å [angström] et une résolution verticale inférieure à 1 Å. La technique a, depuis lors, été adaptée à différents environnements tels que le vide, le milieu liquide, les basses températures, les champs magnétiques et aussi pour des applications en chimie ou en biologie. L'AFM est basée sur la mesure des forces entre un fin stylet et la surface étudiée. Le capteur de force est un ressort-lame (stylet) encastré à une extrémité et muni d'une pointe à l'autre extrémité; il est encore appelé «cantilever». Les forces d'interaction modifient la déflection ou la torsion statique ou oscillante du stylet. La mesure des déformations du «cantilever» dans les microscopes de force actuels s'effectue, le plus souvent, grâce à la déviation d'un faisceau lumineux («diode laser») réfléchi par l'extrémité du stylet, méthode proposée dès 1988 par G. Meyer et N. Amer [...] La majorité des utilisateurs cherche à obtenir des formes ou des tailles caractéristiques de la surface; en balayant l'échantillon sous le «cantilever», on obtient l'image AFM recherchée. Mais on s'est très vite aperçu qu'il était possible avec le même instrument de proposer des situations originales de «physique au nanomètre».

In traditional cartography, the attachment of type in the form of stripping film on to a registered map overlay in proper relationship to linework and other map symbology.

An adhesive, usually a coating of wax is applied to the emulsion side of a wrong reading image positive stripping film. A sharp but delicate knife is used to cut around the type image and using a pair of tweezers, the thin emulsion layer is peeled off and positioned on a clear map overlay. Finally, by using a burnishing tool, the thin emulsion layer containing the type image and coated with wax, is rubbed down thereby ensuring better adhesion. The same process may be done using negative stripping film and a map negative overlay.

A Community Forest Image Management Tool has been developed to assist in keeping track of these images, and making them available over the World Wide Web. Images, which can be photographs, sketches or maps, are assigned to categories. Overview of resampling methods. From the perspective of space, a satellite camera or sensor takes images that provide unique Earth information at scales ranging from very small to very large. To better understand an image, its shape, scale and perspective often are changed by rectification, orthorectification or map projection to relate it to real world coordinates. During that process, however, gaps between pixels may form, requiring that images be resampled to fill in those missing pixels. There are basically 3 methods of resampling : nearest neighbor, bilinear interpolation and cubic convolution.

"Precision Map Image" products have even greater positional accuracy than "Map Image" products. Ground Control Points(GCPs) as well as a map projection are used to spatially align the image. To order a "Precision Map Image" product, ground control points from a map or provided through Global Positional Satellite(GPS) technology are required. To further enhance the positional accuracy of the image, Digital Elevation Models(DEMs) can be used to correct terrain distortions. A DEM at sufficient detail will be needed to provide ortho-correction services.

The Gamma filter performs gamma map filtering. Gamma filtering is primarily used on radar data to remove high frequency noise(speckle) while preserving high frequency features(edges). The Gamma Map filter was first proposed by Kuan.... Lopes modified the Kuan Map filter by assuming a gamma distributed scene and setting up two thresholds. The gamma filter size ranges from 1 to 11. Different filter sizes will greatly affect the quality of processed images. If the filter is too small, the noise filtering algorithm is not effective. If the filter is too large, subtle details of the image will be lost in the filtering process. A 7x7 filter usually gives the best results.... The GAMMA filter performs spatial filtering on each individual pixel in an image using the grey level values in a square window surrounding each pixel. The dimensions of the filter must be odd, and can be from 3x3 to 11x11 pixels.

La critique de la ville nébuleuse. En général on attribue quatre grands types de reproches à cette forme de décentralisation périphérique : 1. manque de structure : l'illisibilité et la fragmentation. La ville a toujours été construite par interventions successives.
