Alternatively, holographic interference of the object and the plane-wave reference can be formed first and its magnified image projected near the hologram plane...

To accelerate optical time reversal based on on-axis interferometry, the quasisingle-shot method was proposed and widely used in many fast [digital optical phase conjugation(DOPC) ] systems for focusing through scattering media. However, this method needs to acquire two images for optical time reversal : one image for the reference beam, and the other one for the interferometric hologram.

DEF

A remote-sensing term referring to the process of assigning different colours to different spectral bands.

CONT

The image processing consisted in generating intensity images and one coherence image. To facilitate their analysis and interpretation, a coloured composition has been created with the results. This composition is obtained by adding the coherence image in red, the average of both images phase intensities in green and the difference between these phase intensities in blue. As such, a high coherence level(value close to 1) appears in red and indicates a very good phase correlation between the two images, a consequence of the various mechanisms of radar signal scattering and of the lack of change which could affect the target. On the contrary, a weak coherence level(value tending to 0) appears in black and indicates a movement in these zones during the 24 hours interval which separated the two image shots. Lastly, the white spots correspond to areas with a strong radar signal backscattering i. e. with zones of hills or vegetation.

Imagery Exploitation System (IES). Modernized Imagery Exploitation System (MIES). MIES is a Corps and EAC tactical imagery exploitation system capable of receiving, processing, and disseminating national and theater imagery. The MIES provides first phase imagery exploitation for the Indications and Warnings (I&W) missions of Army users. The system provides IMINT reports and Secondary Imagery Dissemination (SID) through an extensive communications section. It travels with its own satellite communications (SATCOM) system that provides the relayed national imagery through the Defense Dissemination System (DDS).

CONT

The imagery Exploitation System/Balanced Technology Initiative(IES/BTI) is a first phase near-real time image exploitation system to support Army Corps intelligence and electronic warfare(IEW) situation development, target development and target acquisition. IES/BTI exploits synthetic aperture radar(SAR) and infrared(IR) imagery and annotates the presence and type(artillery, armor, etc) of military units(company size and above). IES/BTI employs a hierarchical reasoning paradigm, using Bayesian inference for hypotheses management and belief propagation to solve the complex force/terrain/military situation and formation.

In an interferogram, coherence is a measure of correlation. It can serve as a measure of the quality. [It gives information] as to the surface type(vegetated vs. rock) or [to an] otherwise invisible change that has occurred in the image [visible only in the phase image of an interferogram].

OBS

Such a measure of correlation ranges from 0.0 (where there is no useful information in the interferogram), to 1.0 (where there is no noise in the interferogram). Both extremes are rarely seen, most images lie somewhere in between. Coherence is affected by low slope, surface properties, time lag between passes, baseline and other technical details of the interferogram.

The InSAR technique exploits the phase difference successive SAR observations and requires the information of an "interferogram" from two Single Look Complex (SLC) SAR images of the same scene acquired at different time.

CONT

Using the INSAR technique, it is possible to produce directly from SAR image data, detailed and accurate three-dimensional height maps of the Earth's surface topography. In addition, an extension of the basic technique, known as Differential INSAR(DINSAR), allows the detection of very small(centimetre-scale) motion of the land surface within an image. Furthermore, INSAR is emerging as a powerful tool for the detection of changes of land surface through the use of phase coherence. These possibilities open up many new potential applications of space-borne SAR data in the areas of cartography, volcanology, geomorphology, ice/glacial motion and land surface classification.

CONT

In a long synthetic aperture (array), SAR focusing involves the removal and compensation of path length differences from the antenna to the target on the ground.

CONT

The main advantage of a focused synthetic aperture is that it increases its array length over those radar signals that can be processed, and thus increases potential SAR resolution at any range. SAR focusing is a necessary process when the length of a synthetic array is a significant fraction of the range to ground being imaged, as the lines-of-sight(range) from a particular point on the ground to each individual element of the array differ in distance. These range differences, or path length differences, of the radar signals can affect image quality. In a focused SAR image these phase errors can be compensated for by applying a phase correction to the return signal at each synthetic aperture element. Focusing errors may be introduced by unknown or uncorrected platform motion. In an unfocused SAR image, the usable synthetic aperture length is quite limited.

Methods that use vision to locate a workpiece and the sites on it suitable for gripping have been reported by Birk, Kelley, and Wilson. The proposed three approaches, each of which utilizes two distinct phases called the instruction phase and the execution phase.... An approach called "heuristic acquisition" uses rules based on a priori knowledge of the workpiece and its hold sites. Here, the instruction phase consists of testing different heuristics for acquiring a part, such as "look for the hole that is large enough to insert a finger into" or "find a flat surface large enough to accommodate the cup on a SAVG". During execution, the image of the workpiece is examined to satisfy the heuristics for that part, and the robot proceeds. Since a heuristic does not guarantee that there is a solution, safety mechanisms such as contact sensors must be included to protect both the robot and the part from damage.
