A process for copying graphic matter by the action of light on an electrically charged photoconductive insulating surface in which the latent image is developed with a resinous powder (such as toner).

CONT

Xerography.... a process that first places an electrostatic charge on a plate [or drum]. An image is then projected onto the plate [or drum], causing the charge to dissipate in the illuminated areas, thus allowing an applied coating of resinous powder to adhere only to the uncharged(dark) areas. The powder is then transferred to paper and is fixed by heat.

A method of engraving in which the design is bitten into the plate with acid.

OBS

The plate is first covered with an acid-resistant resinous substance. The artist then takes a finely pointed needle and draws the design out of this resinous ground. The drawing instrument does not cut into the metal surface. The image which will print is represented by the areas in which the copper of the plate has been exposed. The plate is then immersed in an acid bath. The acid eats into the plate only in those areas not protected by the ground. The length of time the plate remains in the acid bath determines the depth of the etched lines.

These plates use layers of ink-repellent silicon on top of the aluminum substrate to define the non-inking portion of the plate. High brightness, short pulse width(<200 picoseconds) x-ray lasers now offer biologists the possibility of high-resolution imaging of specimens in an aqueous environment without the blurring effects associated with natural motion or chemical erosion. As a step toward developing the capabilities of this type of x-ray microscopy, a tantalum x-ray laser at a 44. 83-angstrom wavelength was used together with an x-ray zone plate optic to image both unlabeled and selectively gold-labeled dried rat sperm nuclei. In the image, 500-angstrom features are clearly visible. This illustrates the importance of x-ray microscopy in determining chemical composition. X-ray microscopy also provides information about the uniformity of sperm chromatin organization and the extent of sperm chromatin hydration.

When a partly developed image is briefly exposed to actinic light, the final developed image becomes reversed. This is because in areas where the negative image had started to form, the emulsion is desensitized by the oxidation products of development. The result is that the extra exposure affects only the shadow areas of the original negative so that the final image is a positive. This type of reversal is known as the Sabattier effect, after its discoverer.

Recently, the so-called "flexo CTP(Computer to Plate) method" has been developed. In this method, a thin, light absorption layer called "Black layer" is formed on the surface of a photosensitive resin plate, and the resultant resin plate is irradiated with a laser to ablate(evaporate) desired portions of the black layer to form a mask bearing an image(formed by the unablated portions of the black layer) on the resin plate directly without separately perparing a mask. A rival to LEDs in many applications, LCDs are particularly popular in the watch display market. The name of these devices describes their composition-LCDs have a liquid crystal material sandwiched between two glass plates separated by about 12 um. The glass plates are sealed around their perimeter. The image appears between two layers of conductive material, one etched on the surface of each glass plate. In operation, a voltage is applied between the two layers of conductive material which changes the molecular orientation of the liquid crystal material. The light passing through the display is thus scattered or reflected in nonequal manner where the voltage has been applied. LCDs emit no light, but can use either reflected or transmitted light to form the display. LCD's have the large advantage of consuming considerably less energy than LEDs.

The Positron Microscope was designed and built to be a hybrid instrument capable of performing several types of positrons and electron microscopy. In the case of the high-speed colony picker, the machinery consists of two tables capable of computer-controlled movement positioned underneath a pair of plungers with a rotating carousel wheel in between that is fitted with 24 reusable needles. To operate the system, a Petri dish containing colonies of yeast or bacteria is placed on one table, and a 96-well microtiter plate is placed on the other. Guided by a digital image that shows the location of colonies in the dish, the first table moves a colony directly underneath a plunger which at the same time is being armed with a needle from the carousel. On a signal from a computer, the plunger dips the needle into the colony and immediately retracts it with "picked" cells. The carousel then rotates the needle over to the second plunger and the table bearing the microtiter plate moves until the correct well is directly underneath it. The computer activates the second plunger, dipping the needle into the growth medium where some of the cells will be deposited. After retraction from the growth medium, the needle is rotated by the carousel through a tank filled with sterilizing liquid and made ready for reuse.

In photomechanical platemaking, a condition in which, despite a strong-looking image, a printing plate prints very weakly or not at all. Blinding may be caused by an excess of gum on the image, which therefore does not accept ink, by glazed ink rollers, or by a strong fountain solution that has worked into the ink, causing it to emulsify.

The name "deep-etch plate" is related to the fact that the printing image is recessed in the plate metal, though only very slightly. The non-printing areas of deep-etch plates are, consequently, on the surface of the plate and slightly above the printing areas. The differences in depth, or in elevation, between the printing and the non-printing areas of deep-etch plates are indeed very slight-on the average about two or three ten-thousandths of an inch. Deep-etch plates have considerably longer press life than do surface plates; they are more dependable, run cleaner, and can be made from positives which lend themselves better to dot-etching than do photographic negatives, the intermediate elements of surface plates.

Niépce used pewter plates in his lithography business, and used various light-sensitive varnishes and pitches as a coating on the metal to record the image. His first success, 1826-27 was with bitumen of Judea coated on a pewter plate. It took 8 hours of exposure to differentially harden the coating, which was washed in oil of lavender diluted with white petroleum. The exposed areas were hardened and did not dissolve; unexposed areas remained soluble and were removed.
