Digital image classification is the process of assigning a pixel(or groups of pixels) of remote sensing image to a land cover class. The objective is to classify each pixel into only one class(crisp or hard classification) or to associate the pixel with many classes(fuzzy or soft classification). The classification techniques may be categorized either on the basis of training process(supervised and unsupervised) or on the basis of theoretical model(parametric and non-parametric). Several classification algorithms(classifiers) have been developed under this categorization. 3, record 3, English, - classification

This workshop will review basic notions of remote sensing and its applications in environmental studies. Examples of projects and applied studies in environment will be introduced. Practical aspects of remote sensing such as image costs, choosing the most appropriate type of image and how to buy images will be covered. Participants will perform an exercise enabling them to have a better understanding of the main steps related to an environmental study using satellite images. Technical specifications of RADARSAT images will be discussed as well as potential applications of these types of images for environmental studies. 2, record 10, French, - radar%20imageur%20%C3%A0%20synth%C3%A8se%20d%27ouverture

[The] push-broom scanner [is a] type of imaging system... commonly used in optical remote sensing satellites such as SPOT. The imaging system has a linear detector array(usually of the CCD type) consisting of a number of detector elements(6000 elements in SPOT HRV). Each detector element projects an "instantaneous field of view(IFOV) "on the ground. The signal recorded by a detector element is proportional to the total radiation collected within its IFOV. At any instant, a row of pixels are formed. As the detector array flies along its track, the row of pixels sweeps along to generate a two-dimensional image. 2, record 17, English, - linear%20detector%20array

It is generally found that natural objects possess self-similarity and self-affinity in their structures. Fractal analysis, a technique based on these properties, has been widely used in various research applications. In the active remote sensing of the earth terrain, it is possible to extract this fractal information from the images obtained. In this application, fractal surface dimension, an important parameter in fractal analysis, can be employed as an additional feature to classify different landuse areas. This fractal surface dimension is generally related to the roughness of the surface. By keeping the x and y coordinates of the pixels of the image, and taking the grey level of each pixel as its z coordinate, a three-dimensional surface can be constructed. The calculation of fractal surface dimension can then be carried out on that surface. 2, record 18, English, - fractal%20analysis

3, record 18, French, - analyse%20fractale

Sensors aboard the Landsat satellites were built in a "whisk broom" (across track) configuration. In a whisk broom sensor, a mirror scans across the satellite’s path, reflecting light into a single detector which collects data one pixel at a time. The moving parts make this type of sensor expensive and more prone to wearing out. 7, record 24, English, - across%2Dtrack%20scanning

Under contract from the Canadian Space Agency(CSA), the Canadian company, Kinetic Sciences Inc.(KSI), developed a proximity sensor that can provide both image features and range data very near to the surface of the sensor. Because the sensor works without using conventional lenses, it reduces the potential for distorting the image... An important need in many robotics systems is to obtain proximity measurements-which establish how close one object is to another-of the features of an object as it is approached at a close range by the finger tips or robot rippers’. In this situation normal visual sensing tends to be obscured, and can prevent the robot from properly grasping objects or completing tasks. What was required and developed by KSI was a ear-touch proximity sensor that could provide detailed information on the distance and orientation of one object with respect to another for objects between 1 centimetre and 1 millimetre away from the finger tip of the robot. 2, record 26, English, - proximity%20sensor

Imaging spectrometry... is the field in remote sensing where sensors acquire image data in many, narrow and contiguous wavebands. The aim is to produce on a pixel by pixel basis radiance and reflectance data, which can be used to model physical properties of the Earth surface. This data forms an addition to subsurface geophysical data. 6, record 28, English, - imaging%20spectroscopy

Imaging spectroscopy has many names in the remote sensing community, including imaging spectrometry, hyperspectral, and ultraspectral imaging. Spectroscopy is the study of electromagnetic radiation. Spectrometry is derived from spectro-photometry, the measure of photons as a function of wavelength, a term used for years in astronomy. However, spectrometry is becoming a term used to indicate the measurement of non-light quantities, such as in mass spectrometry (e.g. Ball, 1995). Hyper means excessive, but no imaging spectrometer in use can hardly be considered hyper-spectral, after all, a couple of hundred channels pales in comparison to truly high resolution spectrometer with millions of channels. Ultraspectral is beyond hyperspectral, a lofty goal that has not yet been reached. ... Researchers at the USGS Spectroscopy Lab are studying and applying methods for identifying and mapping materials through spectroscopic remote sensing (called imaging spectroscopy, hyperspectral imaging, imaging spectrometry, ultraspectral imaging, etc), on the Earth and throughout the solar system using laboratory, airborne and spacecraft spectrometers. 4, record 28, English, - imaging%20spectroscopy

Remote heat sensing techniques evolved from space technology developments related to weather satellites can be used to detect comparative heat energy losses from roofs, walls, windows, and so on. A method called thermography is defined as the conversion of a temperature pattern detected on a surface by contrast into an image called a thermogram... Thermovision is defined as the technique of utilizing the infrared radiation from a surface which varies with the surface temperatures, to produce a thermal picture or thermogram. A camera can scan the area in question and focus the radiation on a sensitive detector which in turn converts it to an electronic signal. 2, record 29, English, - thermovision
