The MPEG standard is primarily a bitstream specification, although it also specifies a typical decoding process to assist in interpreting the bitstream specification. This approach supports data interchange, but it does not restrict creativity and innovation in the means for creating or decoding that bitstream. The bitstream architecture is based on a sequence of pictures, each of which contains the data needed to create a single displayable image. Note that the order of transmission of pictures in the data stream may not be the same as the order in which pictures will be displayed-this will be evident shortly. There are four different kinds of pictures, depending on how each picture is to be decoded : I pictures... P pictures... B pictures are interpolated pictures, which are coded by interpolating between a previous and a future I or P picture. This process is sometimes referred to as "bidirectional prediction.

RADARSAT ScanSAR Beam Modes : A ScanSAR beam mode is composed of either two, three, or four single beams. The sequence of beams is organized so that the data is collected from a larger area, than what can be collected using a single beam. The ability to "steer" the radar beam using different incidence angles increases the frequency of repeat coverage. For the ScanSAR beam modes, the radar backscatter decrease resulting from incidence angle differences within the image range should be considered before interpreting the image brightness of a specific target. Incidence angle corrections should be applied on the data before making a direct comparison of image brightness values from different Standard beam mode images. 2, record 13, English, - ScanSAR%20beam%20mode

Video compression ratios available from various vendors of full-motion video boards range up to 160 : 1 and perform adequately on standalone multimedia desktop platforms transmitting image data from CD-ROM or videodisk peripherals. However, these compression ratios will not be sufficient for effective transmission of complex videos and renderings that are being produced by engineering designers or even simpler videos in highly interactive multiuser networked environments. The solution, however, is already on the horizon in the form of fractional dimensional compression techniques(fractals) that can reach astonishing compression ratios of 10, 000 : 1. This is possible because fractals, despite their apparent complexity, have a very low information content and can be specified as relatively simple expressions. Fractal compression is obtained via mathematical functions that describe a sequence of transformations of an image and when applied repeatedly, converge on a unique fractal. Fractal compression algorithms can be incorporated in software or VLSI microchips and, if applied to a typical CD-ROM disk, should provide nearly seven hours of full-motion. 2, record 21, English, - fractal%20compression

There are four different kinds of pictures, depending on how each picture is to be decoded : I pictures are intracoded, meaning that they are coded independent of any other picture.

There are four different kinds of pictures, depending on how each picture is to be decoded : I pictures.... P pictures are predicted pictures, which are coded using motion compensation from a previous I or P picture. B pictures.... D pictures.... 1, record 24, English, - P%20picture

2, record 31, French, - signifiant
