Near-field optical microscopy(NFOM) uses a very small light source to beat the diffraction limit of conventional optical microscopy. The sample is placed near the light source so that imaging resolution is comparable to the diameter of the light source. Instrumentation. The near-field light source is made from a glass capillary that is heated with a CO2 [carbon dioxide] laser and pulled to an atomically-sharp tip. The outside of the capillary is coated with silver for reflectivity except for the end of the tip. When a partly developed image is briefly exposed to actinic light, the final developed image becomes reversed. This is because in areas where the negative image had started to form, the emulsion is desensitized by the oxidation products of development. The result is that the extra exposure affects only the shadow areas of the original negative so that the final image is a positive. This type of reversal is known as the Sabattier effect, after its discoverer. 6, record 11, English, - Sabattier%20effect

In the chromogenic processes, three selectively light sensitive layers in the silver halide emulsion are exposed to light. Initially, a black and white, silver halide, latent image is chemically developed to form a negative on all three layers. During this stage, the developer used to convert the exposed silver halide to metallic silver becomes oxidized. The oxidized developer combines with color couplers initiating the selective formation of cyan, magenta and yellow dyes within discrete layers of the emulsion. The image silver is then bleached and unexposed silver halide is removed by fixing. 3, record 18, English, - image%20silver

A yellowish-brown image color or stain produced on photographic films usually as a result of improper fixing and/or washing. The residual silver that results from insufficient fixing reacts with sulfur in the air or on the film to form silver sulfide. The residual hypo(thiosulfate) remaining on the film after washing breaks down and combines with silver to form silver sulfide. 1, record 46, French, - d%C3%A9veloppement%20par%20inversion
