  • The Eye
CONT

Scanning laser ophthalmoscopy is an imaging technique that mimics essential features of conventional fundus photography but has better spatial selectivity for the plane of interest in the fundus. Because [a scanning laser ophthalmoscope] picks up information only from a small volume in three-dimensional space at any given time and then reconstructs an image from a three-dimensional scanning array of such points, scatter and fluorescence from the anterior segment of the eye is very effectively rejected. Built on the flying-spot scanner principle, it only illuminates a spot with a diameter of a few micrometers at the fundus and then sweeps the spot across the horizontal and vertical directions of an image plane inside the eye...

The acquisition time course is often over several minutes for DCE [dynamic contrast enhancement], while DSC [dynamic susceptibility-weighted contrast] is about 60 seconds in length. This time allows for measurement of the wash-in and wash-out of the contrast material in the EES [extracellular extravascular space]. There are several methods for image interpretation. The simplest method is to examine the signal intensity curves over time for a region of interest. The rate or slope of the wash-in and wash-out curve for multiple regions of interest can be visually assessed.

To maintain a stable perception of the world around us while we engage in normal movements throughout our day, such as walking, we have something known as the vestibulo-ocular reflex(VOR). This reflex keeps us steady and balanced even though our eyes and head are continuously moving when we perform most actions. When we make a head movement, our eye muscles are triggered instantly to create an eye movement opposite to that of our head movement at the exact same speed to readjust the visual world, which, in turn, stabilizes our retinal image by keeping the eye still in space and focused on an object, despite the head motion.

GOES-9, a three axis stabilized spacecraft, remains stationary in space which allows the [imager and sounder] instruments to be continuously pointed at the earth. The scanning system moves back and forth(i. e., east to west and then west to east) as it moves north to south. While the spacecraft is stationary, it is not absolutely still. Earth location and registration accuracy are [affected] by orbital motions, instrument motion, and thermal distortion. A complicated set of navigation(earth location) and registration(image-to-image location of a landmark) correction schemes are necessary to compensate for these effects.... The registration schemes briefly are : 1) image motion compensation(IMC) and 2) mirror motion compensation(MMC). The IMC removes spacecraft orbit and attitude motion from each image. The MMC automatically corrects for the predictable effects of the instrument mirror motions.

CONT

Kyphoplasty is a newer treatment for patients immobilized by the painful vertebral body compression fractures associated with osteoporosis. Like vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that can alleviate up to 90% of the pain caused by compression fractures. In addition to relieving pain, kyphoplasty can also stabilize the fracture, restore height, and reduce deformity.... Kyphoplasty is performed under local or general anesthesia. Using image guidance x-rays, two small incisions are made and a probe is placed into the vertebral space where the fracture is located. The bone is drilled and a balloon, called a bone tamp, is inserted on each side. These balloons are then inflated with contrast medium(to be seen using image guidance x-rays) until they expand to the desired height and removed. The balloon does not remain in the patient. It simply creates a cavity for the cement and also helps expand the compressed bone. The spaces created by the balloons are then filled with PMMA [poly(methyl methacrylate) ], the same orthopaedic cement used in vertebroplasty, binding the fracture. The cement hardens quickly, providing strength and stability to the vertebra, restoring height, and relieving pain.

CONT

A projection technique that reduces data dimensionality, and an advanced neural network that utilizes fuzzy-set mathematics.

CONT

The intent for multispectral and hyperspectral image data analysis is to rapidly and inexpensively associate a ground cover label to each pixel in the image. Given the multivariate nature of such data, the process of data analysis is one of dividing up the N-dimensional feature space into M exhaustive but non-overlapping regions where M is the number of classes of materials existing in the scene. The process involves defining the M classes of interest in a quantitative fashion, such that each pixel in the scene, which exists as a discrete location in the N-dimensional space, can be uniquely associated with one of the M classes. Frequently, this is done by using a small number of samples in the scene, called design samples or training samples, to define an N-dimensional probability density function for each of the M classes.

The Orlan spacesuit was used for Russian EVA's on Salyut, Mir, and the International Space Station. It was designed by the Zvezda OKB [Russia : Experimental Design Bureau], and derived from the Kretchet suit intended for use on the lunar surface. It consisted of flexible limbs attached to a one-piece rigid body/helmet unit. The suit was entered through a hatch in the rear of the torso. The exterior of the hatch housed the life support equipment. Maximum operation time was three hours when the Orlan-D version of the suit was first used on Salyut 6. Later Orlan-DM versions of the suit increased this period to nine hours. The integrated design meant that no external hoses were required as in the American space suits. The suit standard pressure was 0. 40 atmospheres, so that a prebreathe period of only 30 minutes was required. Electrical power and communications were via an umbilical cord to the station. Control of the suit was via a panel on the chest, with the markings in mirror image. The cosmonaut viewed the panel using a mirror on the wrist of the suit.

Under contract from the Canadian Space Agency(CSA), the Canadian company, Kinetic Sciences Inc.(KSI), developed a proximity sensor that can provide both image features and range data very near to the surface of the sensor. Because the sensor works without using conventional lenses, it reduces the potential for distorting the image... An important need in many robotics systems is to obtain proximity measurements-which establish how close one object is to another-of the features of an object as it is approached at a close range by the finger tips or robot rippers’. In this situation normal visual sensing tends to be obscured, and can prevent the robot from properly grasping objects or completing tasks. What was required and developed by KSI was a ear-touch proximity sensor that could provide detailed information on the distance and orientation of one object with respect to another for objects between 1 centimetre and 1 millimetre away from the finger tip of the robot.

Executive suites are very common in most U. S. cities and may include an inexpensive marketing package to help you develop a local corporate image. These suites offer economic overhead through pooled secretarial support, office space, photocopying, mail handling and telephone answering services. Telephones are answered with your firm's name and you pay a monthly rental and phone answering fee plus additional charges for specific services used or furniture rented. Costs of these services vary by region and by size of space. You are usually free to move within the building as your space needs change. You will probably find it more economical to open your own office once you have more than five staff on site.

Remote heat sensing techniques evolved from space technology developments related to weather satellites can be used to detect comparative heat energy losses from roofs, walls, windows, and so on. A method called thermography is defined as the conversion of a temperature pattern detected on a surface by contrast into an image called a thermogram... Thermovision is defined as the technique of utilizing the infrared radiation from a surface which varies with the surface temperatures, to produce a thermal picture or thermogram. A camera can scan the area in question and focus the radiation on a sensitive detector which in turn converts it to an electronic signal.

The Lorenz attractor. This magical image, resembling an owl' s mask or butterfly's wings, became en emblem for the early explorers of chaos. It revealed the fine structure hidden within a disorderly stream of data. Traditionally, the changing values of any one variable could be displayed in a so-called time series. To show the changing relationships among three variables required a different technique. At any instant in time, the three variables fix the location of a point in three-dimensional space; as the system changes, the motion of the point represents the continuously changing variables. Because the system never exactly repeats itself, the trajectory never intersects itself. Instead it loops around and around forever.

DEF
