Colour enhancement. Remote-sensing systems that operate VIS-NIR [visible, near-infrared] range typically include three channels that approximate the response of the human eye, and afford the opportunity to construct RGB [red-green-blue] composite image that resembles natural colour. Unfortunately, when displayed, many such images appear to have mostly tones of gray … Contrast stretching may help, but the colours tend to be far less saturated than we are accustomed to when observing or photographing in the field. Besides trying standard stretches, [there is] another way to enhance natural colour … The results of enhancing images to bring out colour are highly dependent on the nature of landscape and the image measurements.

Histogram stretching is a method of changing the contrast of an image by adjusting the number of pixel spectral intensity values in each value bin(from 0 to 255) of the image's spectral reflectance intensity histogram.

L'étirement d'histogramme (aussi appelé "linéarisation d'histogramme" ou "expansion de la dynamique") consiste à répartir les fréquences d'apparition des pixels sur la largeur de l'histogramme. Ainsi, il s'agit d'une opération consistant à modifier l'histogramme de telle manière à répartir au mieux les intensités sur l'échelle des valeurs disponibles. Ceci revient à étendre l'histogramme afin que la valeur d'intensité la plus faible soit à zéro et que la plus haute soit à la valeur maximale. De cette façon, si les valeurs de l'histogramme sont très proches les unes des autres, l'étirement va permettre de fournir une meilleure répartition afin de rendre les pixels clairs encore plus clairs et les pixels foncés proches du noir.

L'étalement d'histogramme modifie chaque pixel indépendamment de son voisin, ce qui en fait un traitement réversible, car tous les pixels ayant la même valeur initiale auront de nouveau la même valeur.
