Subject field(s)

CONT

A "RAW Signal Data" product contains raw or unprocessed radar video baseband data in complex in-phase and quadrature signal (I and Q) format as they are recorded by the spacecraft. The only processing performed to the downlink X-band "raw signal data" is the frame synchronization, meaning re-assembly of the data into contiguous radar range lines in matrix form, and the CEOS [Committee on Earth Observations Satellite] formatting. Each range line of data is represented by one Signal Data Record in the RAW CEOS product.

OBS

The RAW product can contain any single beam mode, or for ScanSAR any combination of different beam modes, depending on the operation of the SAR instrument during the data reception or recording period. A RAW product cannot, however, combine data from more than one beam mode, i. e. data from two different beam modes are always packaged as two separate products. A RAW product must be SAR processed before it can be displayed as imagery. RAW products are typically produced on 8 mm(Exabyte) tapes. This is the standard medium for exchanging data between network stations.

OBS

Raw data products are available for all RADARSAT beam modes.

OBS

ScanSAR imagery is generated with a combination of single beams covering adjoining swaths. This provides the largest swath coverage available in RADARSAT-2 products. However, the increased coverage is obtained at the expense of spatial resolution. ScanSAR imaging mode will be available in co-polarization, cross-polarization and dual-polarization.

OBS

Mode «scanSAR».

ScanSAR Mode.

CONT

SAR acquisitions can be carried out in different modes according to the users requirements. The most popular Stripmap mode allows to map contiguous strips with reasonable resolution. In Spotlight mode, higher azimuth resolution can be achieved, whereas in ScanSAR mode wider swaths are obtained, yet at the expense of a significantly lower resolution.

CONT

Soil moisture will be determined in the top 10 cm of soil with an accuracy of 2.5 percent by volume over a large area (SCANSAR mode type of swath widths).

Extended beam modes. Low incidence. High indicence.

OBS

The RADASAT-2 extended functions allow for high-resolution space imagery modes up to three meters as well as a selection of multiple polarisation modes. In the quad-pol mode, the SAR sensor on board RADARSAT-2 is able to measure the amplitude and the backscattered wave phase in all combinations of the antenna linear polarisations-emission and reception(HH, HV, VV AND VH).

OBS

CONT

RADARSAT-2 will be able to switch from right- to left-looking mode. This process will take about 10 minutes. About 75% of imaging will be performed in right-looking: the left-looking mode will be used for Antarctic mapping, emergency situations and to improve market access. Several imaging modes are available with RADARSAT-2 (incidence angles, resolution and polarization). A single image take may vary from a minimum of 5 seconds to a maximum of 28 minutes.

Les fonctions élargies de RADARSAT-2 dotent le satellite de modes d'imagerie à haute résolution spatiale, soit jusqu'à 3 m, mais aussi d'une sélection de polarisations multiples. CONT

To target a specific area on the Earth disk, the scanning thresholds can be set so that a reduced number of forward scan lines are included in each scan cycle. Since these reduced scans can be completed in less time than a full Earth disk scan, reduced scans can provide imagery with a higher temporal resolution than that of the normal half-hourly full Earth disk scans. This mode of scanning is often referred to as reduced scanning or rapid scanning. It should be noted that in rapid scan imaging mode the spin rate, the stepping rate, the number of pixels per line of image data and the resolution of the image data are identical to that for normal full Earth disk scans.
