Imagine Canada builds on the proud history of two leading voices of Canada's charitable and nonprofit sector : the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy(CCP) and the Coalition of National Voluntary Organizations(NVO). Founded in 1974, NVO was the national advocacy and public policy voice for the voluntary sector. CCP was created in 1981 to support the work of charities, foundations, socially conscious corporations and fundraisers. In 2003, the boards of both organizations proposed an alliance, recognizing a substantial overlap in membership and advocacy objectives. The following year, their members and stakeholders endorsed a vision of a Canada where "strong and vital charities and nonprofit organizations, the private sector and governments work together for social progress and vibrant communities. "In January 2005, both organizations launched Imagine Canada. 1, record 1, English, - Imagine%20Canada

Semantic segmentation focuses on classifying each pixel in an image into a specific category. It assigns a unique class label to each pixel in an image and divides it into one of the predefined set of semantic categories, such as person, car, or tree. However, this segmentation technique does not differentiate between instances of the same class and treats them as a single entity. Imagine coloring a scene where all cars are blue, all people are red, and everything else is green – that's semantic segmentation in action. 2, record 3, English, - semantic%20segmentation

2, record 3, French, - segmentation%20s%C3%A9mantique

Viewing Distance at Computer Workstations. ... Accommodation is when the lens capsule in your eye changes shape to focus on a close object. The eyes have a default accommodation distance, called the resting point of accommodation (RPA). That is the distance at which the eyes focus when there is nothing to focus on. In total darkness our eyes are set to focus at a particular distance, so that if the lights were turned on, an object at that distance would be in clear focus. The RPA averages 30 inches for younger people and gets farther away with age. 5, record 23, English, - resting%20point%20of%20accommodation

The most common type of CVT employs a steel belt and two pulleys. Rather than step among four or five gears of different sizes, the CVT varies the effective diameter of the drive pulley and driven pulley to create a broad range of drive ratios free of the shift feel of conventional transmissions. Imagine riding a bike on which the sprocket and rear gear magically change size without requiring the chain to jump from one gear to another, and you have the basic idea. By increasing or decreasing the space between the pulleys’ respective halves, the CVT varies the effective diameter of the conical inner surfaces on which the belt rides. It varies these parameters at any time, at any engine or vehicle speed. 4, record 39, English, - continuously%20variable%20transmission

The development of a global concept of languages in universities implies that the opening up of nations and cultures is accompanied by a decompartmentalization of disciplines and languages. It is necessary to introduce a form of plurilingual education at university(lending to the joint development of linguistic and disciplinary knowledge), or to consider restructuring existing disciplines, or even to imagine new areas of teaching, concentrating in particular on language policy, while at the same time attempting to promote new forms of research linked to new linguistic objectives. 3, record 41, English, - decompartmentalization%20of%20disciplines

One way of coming to grips with the properties of complex systems is through a field of mathematics devoted to the study of so-called cellular automata. The best way of explaining its style of analysis is by example. Imagine a long row of boxes-some black, some white-arranged to form some initial pattern, a starting stage. The row of boxes is to give rise to a second row, just below the first. ... Charnock's formula for the atmospheric side makes physically much more sense than for the ocean side. For the atmosphere, one can imagine a wind blowing over roughness elements somehow related to the wave height. This is not quite correct, because waves are constantly moving and changing their shape, but it yields reasonable results. For the ocean side, however, you have breaking waves injecting turbulence into the ocean. So the length-scale of turbulence near the surface is more likely connected to the turbulence spectrum caused by the breaking events, rather than to the wave height. This implies that Charnock's formula lacks a clear physical interpretation. People use it mainly for the lack of better models. 1, record 64, English, - Charnock%26rsquo%3Bs%20formula

The [linguistic] unease was enough to lead voters in three states--Florida, Arizona and Colorado--to support English-as-the-official-language propositions, bringing the total of such states to 17. It's hard to know what to make of the trend. Is it based on the fear that America will go the way of Quebec, where aspirants to public office must speak both English and French... But then I look at Miami, where the disadvantages are more likely to accrue to those who cannot speak Spanish, where it is not difficult to imagine a successful mayoral campaign being undertaken by a candidate who speaks little or no English, and I wonder if those who fear the Quebecking of sections of America may not just have a point.(The Guardian, 8 Jan. 1989, p. 19;5). 1, record 65, English, - Quebecking

Matric potential is the most important component in soil, but is more difficult to visualize. Water will not freely leave soil unless soil is very wet. This is because of adhesion and cohesion. Imagine placing a clump of dry soil on a table, then dropping a drop of water onto the clump of dry soil. If you elevate the soil off of the table, will the water leap out of it, dropping to the table? Of course not. It will stay in the soil, held by adhesion, or what we often call matric forces. The symbol for matric potential is [psi subscript m]. These values are negative or zero, but never positive, because this water is not free to move to the zero state.... The matric potential of a soil refers to the potential of the most easily removed molecule... 5, record 66, English, - capillary%20potential

The orbital aircraft has the capability to fly suborbital missions without propellant transfer, to distances of 3, 000 to 6, 000 nautical miles, depending on the aerodynamic configuration This capability exists because the airframe is capable of independent takeoff and landing. This offers a transcontinental range for a number of alternate missions that are difficult to imagine for an air launch concept. For the same reason, the tanker and orbital aircraft may be based at different locations, and interfaced only in flight. This offers more basing flexibility and removes the requirements for specialized facilities and ground support equipment such as that needed to mate the Shuttle orbiter to its carrier aircraft. 2, record 70, English, - orbital%20aircraft

The Hausdorff dimension is defined for any subset of R [exponent] n that you can probably imagine. This includes all open sets, closed sets, countable unions of closed sets, countable intersections of open sets, etc. It will follow easily from the definition that Hausdorff dimension is not invariant under homeomorphisms. However, the topological dimension of E is the infimum of the Hausdorff dimensions of its homeomorphic images h(E). Later we will discover that Hausdorff dimension is invariant under something slightly stronger-quasi-isometries(sometimes called "bi-Lipschitz maps" or "Lipeomorphic maps"). Indeed, we will see that the equivalence class of quasi-isometric self-similar curves is completely determined by Hausdorff dimension! 5, record 72, English, - Hausdorff%20dimension

Of all the therapies that pharmacologists see on the horizon, perhaps the most tantalizing are ones that would cure disease by fixing damaged genes. Diseases such as cystic fibrosis, hemophilia, and severe combined immunodeficiency are termed "single-gene" disorders because a single abnormal gene makes an abnormal protein, which, in turn, results in the sumptoms of the disease. In theory, "genetic surgery" could cure these single-gene diseases by cutting out the abnormal gene and replacing it with a working one. One might even imagine diseases with more complicated genetic underpinnings, such as certain forms of heart disease, being conquered with more extensive "genetic surgery". 1, record 76, English, - genetic%20surgery

Automotive engineers could imagine, for instance, constructing an electrorheological clutch. The fluid inside this clutch would couple a car's engine to its drive shaft, which delivers power to the wheels. When solidified, the fluid would force the drive shaft to rotate. As it liquifies, the fluid would allow the engine to disengage from the drive shaft and spin freely, as if in neutral gear. Such a clutch would have few parts to wear or fail. And with a response time of a few milliseconds, it would make purely mechanical clutches look slow. It was also hoped that electrorheological fluids would lead to valveless hydraulic systems, in which solidifying fluid would shut off flow through a thin section of pipe. 1, record 78, English, - electrorheological%20clutch

1, record 78, French, - embrayage%20%C3%A9lectrorh%C3%A9ologique

Performance measurement is like looking at the wake of the ship. Imagine the warden... like the captain of a ship looking at the wake... We can see where the ship has been, we know where the ship is, and we can project where the ship will be if we keep on the same course. If it's off course we can make correction in the steering to get it back on course. Now imagine that the captain leaves the bridge and walks around the ship and looks for things that should be done, are not done and gets the proper staff to do them. The ship will then follow the course... These are action indicators.... We need performance indicators... We also need action indicators. 1, record 80, English, - action%20indicator

Instrument proposed by John Dales and based on the principle that, since environment policy cannot be grounded on equalizing the marginal social cost of pollution with the marginal social benefit of abating pollution(theses functions being almost impossible to ascertain), standards of environmental quality are decided on by the government authorities. A quality standard can be defined with reference to the degree of accepted pollution corresponding to a given quantity of pollutant discharged per unit of time(for example, one year). One can then imagine this annual total quantity of pollutant being represented by bonds which would really be pollution rights. The bonds could be put on sale by the public sector in an actual market for pollution rights. These rights would be negotiable and sold at prices determined by supply and demand. 1, record 89, English, - auction%20of%20pollution%20rights

To treat CCA theoretically we consider the following "Sutherland's Ghost" model(Ball and Witten 1984b). Let us imagine that the clusters are constructed according to an algorithm similar to the hierarchical version of the ballistic aggregation model. However, instead of combining the clusters using ballistic trajectories, one selects a monomer belonging to each of the two clusters, and joins the clusters by positioning the monomers on adjacent sites of the lattice(This is done in the spirit of reaction-limited CCA). The specific feature of this model is that the particles are allowed to overlap. 2, record 90, English, - Sutherland%26rsquo%3Bs%20ghost

A technique used in behavior therapy in which anxiety reduction is sought by first encouraging the individual affected to imagine anxiety-provoking stimuli in a way that will produce maximal anxiety. As the situation is a controlled one, with no possibility of objective danger, these reactions are not reinforced on the principle that nonreinforcement will result in their extinction. 1, record 99, English, - implosive%20therapy
