Scanning transmission electron microscopy(STEM) combines the principles of transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy and can be performed on either type of instrument. Like TEM [transmission electron microscopy], STEM requires very thin samples and looks primarily at beam electrons transmitted by the sample. One of its principal advantages over TEM is in enabling the use of other signals that cannot be spatially correlated in TEM, including secondary electrons, scattered beam electrons, characteristic X-rays, and electron energy loss. Like SEM [scanning electron microscopy], the STEM technique scans a very finely focused beam of electrons across the sample in a raster pattern. Interactions between the beam electrons and sample atoms generate a serial signal stream, which is correlated with beam position to build a virtual image in which the signal level at any location in the sample is represented by the gray level at the corresponding location in the image. The Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer MERIS forms part of the core instrument payload of ESA's environmental research satellite ENVISAT-1. MERIS is funded by ESA. The demands of the European scientific community for a global environmental monitoring system, whose technical characteristics enable the extraction of quantitative information from ocean colour data, as well as for documentation of the state and evolution of the atmosphere and land surfaces, led to the conception of MERIS. The oceanographic mission is radiometrically the most demanding in terms of low radiance levels and their associated high signal-to-noise ratios. The instrument will be capable of detecting the low levels of radiation emerging from the ocean(linked to the water constituents by the processes of absorption and scattering), in addition to acquiring information about the atmospheric medium through which the observation is made as well as terrestrial environments. L'instrument IBIS à bord d'INTEGRAL [est] chargé de fournir des images précises du ciel dans un domaine d'énergie allant de 20 keV à 10 MeV. [Cet instrument] est l'héritier direct du télescope SIGMA. Sa conception est en effet très semblable, alliant un masque codé à un ensemble détecteur à base de caméras gamma, le tout étant protégé des rayonnements parasites par des blindages actifs et passifs. L'originalité d'IBIS (Imager on Board the Integral Satellite) réside surtout dans les performances de l'ensemble détecteur qui devrait permettre d'atteindre une sensibilité dix fois meilleure que celle de SIGMA.
