Scanning transmission electron microscopy(STEM) combines the principles of transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy and can be performed on either type of instrument. Like TEM [transmission electron microscopy], STEM requires very thin samples and looks primarily at beam electrons transmitted by the sample. One of its principal advantages over TEM is in enabling the use of other signals that cannot be spatially correlated in TEM, including secondary electrons, scattered beam electrons, characteristic X-rays, and electron energy loss. Like SEM [scanning electron microscopy], the STEM technique scans a very finely focused beam of electrons across the sample in a raster pattern. Interactions between the beam electrons and sample atoms generate a serial signal stream, which is correlated with beam position to build a virtual image in which the signal level at any location in the sample is represented by the gray level at the corresponding location in the image. Its primary advantage over conventional SEM imaging is the improvement in spatial resolution.

The Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer MERIS forms part of the core instrument payload of ESA's environmental research satellite ENVISAT-1. MERIS is funded by ESA. The demands of the European scientific community for a global environmental monitoring system, whose technical characteristics enable the extraction of quantitative information from ocean colour data, as well as for documentation of the state and evolution of the atmosphere and land surfaces, led to the conception of MERIS. The oceanographic mission is radiometrically the most demanding in terms of low radiance levels and their associated high signal-to-noise ratios. The instrument will be capable of detecting the low levels of radiation emerging from the ocean(linked to the water constituents by the processes of absorption and scattering), in addition to acquiring information about the atmospheric medium through which the observation is made as well as terrestrial environments. The characteristics of MERIS will also be of great value for the retrieval of information on land surfaces, in particular that of global biomass.

These sensors with nearly global daily coverage employ visible wavelength channels of observation with spectral characteristics suited for water quality monitoring of turbid lakes and coastal regions. Turbidity is one of the essential water quality indicators as it describes, in practise, the integrated amount of algae biomass and suspended matter.

Le traitement effectué permet d'affiner l'ouverture de l'antenne. On parle donc de synthèse d'ouverture. D'où le nom de ce type de système. L'originalité d'IBIS (Imager on Board the Integral Satellite) réside surtout dans les performances de l'ensemble détecteur qui devrait permettre d'atteindre une sensibilité dix fois meilleure que celle de SIGMA. Pour couvrir un domaine d'énergie de près de 3 ordres de grandeur, il a fallu recourir à l'utilisation de deux caméras. La première, ISGRI (Integral Soft Gamma-Ray Imager), fonctionne à basse énergie (20 keV - 1 MeV). La seconde, PICsIT (PIxellated CsI Telescope), mesure les photons de plus haute énergie (150 keV - 10 MeV).

ASTER(Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) is an imaging instrument that is flying on Terra, a satellite launched in December 1999 as part of NASA's Earth Observing System(EOS). ASTER is a cooperative effort between NASA and Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry(METI) and the Earth Remote Sensing Data Analysis Center(ERSDAC). ASTER will be used to obtain detailed maps of land surface temperature, emissivity, reflectance and elevation. The EOS platforms are part of NASA's Earth Science Enterprise, whose goal is to obtain a better understanding of the interactions between the biosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and atmosphere.

Theoretical studies have shown the potential scientific value of multi-spacecraft radio tomographic imaging of the magnetosphere. The <10 RE WIND perigee passes during August 2000 afforded a unique opportunity to test and verify the capabilities of radio tomography by measuring interspacecraft electromagnetic wave propagation parameters using the Radio Plasma Imager(RPI) on IMAGE as the transmitter and the WAVES instrument on WIND as the receiver.... We show how changes in the path-integrated electron density/magnetic field product can be unambiguously measured from this continuous, low signal to noise ratio, single frequency measurement.

The POLDER(Polarization and Directionality of the Earth's Reflectances) instrument will observe the polarization, directional and spectral characteristics of the solar light reflected by aerosols, clouds, oceans and land surfaces. POLDER is a push broom, wide field of view, multi-band imaging radiometer/polarimeter developed by CNES. Multi-angle viewing is achieved by the along-track migration at the spacecraft velocity of a quasi-square footprint intercepted by the total instantaneous 114-degree wide field of view. This footprint is partitioned into 242x274 elements of quasi-constant 7kmx6km resolution, imaged by a CCD matrix in the focal plane.
