CONT

Quantitative three-dimensional echocardiography has been developed at Columbia University in New York and validated both at Columbia and at the Danbury Hospital laboratory. Measurements made using three-dimensional echocardiography have been validated against magnetic resonance imaging, cineventriculography, and gross anatomical specimens. These validation studies have demonstrated that three-dimensional echocardiography is superior to two-dimensional echocardiography for quantitative measurements. Moreover, three-dimensional echocardiography is less expensive than other modalities as well as safe(no radioisotopes), portable, easy to perform, accurate, reproducible and acceptable to patients for repeated application.

OBS

DEF

A scanning radiometer that measures microwave radiation in five wavelength bands and 10 channels to determine the wind, sea surface temperature and roughness, cloud water content, precipitation, snow cover and sea ice.

CONT

The scanning multichannel microwave radiometer(SMMR) is an imaging 5-frequency radiometer... It measures dual-polarized microwave radiances from the earth's atmosphere and surface, primarily for the purpose of deriving global and nearly all-weather measurements of sea surface temperature, wind speed, and atmospheric liquid water and water vapor.

OBS

This radiometer flew on Seasat (launched in June 1978) and Nimbus-7 (launched in October 1978).

Planning of a multi-spectral auroral imaging observatory(AURIO) has been on its way for some years now in the ESA Programme(Stadsnes et al. 1987). In 1990 ESA selected AURIO together with an advanced particle and fields observatory, APAFO, to constitute the Space Science Elements in the Polar Platform Programme, but without accommodating these experiments on the first mission called ENVISAT-1. As of today it is not yet clear when AURIO will be flown. AURIO would provide images of the aurora in the IR, visible and UV-range, and of the X-ray aurora(from few keV to >100 keV) with much better spatial and temporal resolution than yet obtained. Together with the in-situ particle and fields measurements, this would enable studies of fine and medium-scale coupling processes between the magnetosphere and the upper atmosphere.

Specimens to be imaged with a CSLM [confocal scanning laser microscope] must be labelled with a fluorescent probe. Fluorescent probes are available for a wide range of biological preparations permitting the use of the CSLM to image such things as macromolecular structures(such as proteins, lipids, carbohydrates and nucleic acids) and physiological ions(such as Calcium and pH). The CSLM can be to image static fluorescent specimens, or to provide dynamic quantitative imaging and measurements.

The Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System(CERES) experiment is one of the highest priority scientific satellite instruments developed for EOS. CERES products include both solar-reflected and Earth-emitted radiation from the top of the atmosphere to the Earth's surface. Cloud properties are determined using simultaneous measurements by other EOS instruments such as the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS). Analyses of the CERES data, which build upon the foundation laid by previous missions such as the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment(ERBE), will lead to a better understanding of the role of clouds and the energy cycle in global climate change.

On the 1994 shuttle radar flights, 3-D images were created by flying on a near-repeating orbit, imaging targets twice from different perspectives. This approach works for individual targets, but requires extremely precise navigation on the second pass and wouldn’t be practical on a continuous mapping mission. With single-pass interferometry, two antennas fly in "formation, "collecting two sets of data simultaneously. SRTM's mast permits simultaneous measurements separated by a fixed distance.
