synthetic aperture radar; SAR :[A] synthetic aperture radar(SAR) is a side-looking imaging radar usually operating on either an aircraft or a spacecraft. The radar transmits a series of short, coherent pulses to the ground producing a footprint whose size is inversely proportional to the antenna size, its aperture. Because the antenna size is generally small, the footprint is large and any particular target is illuminated by several hundred radar pulses. Intensive signal processing involving the detection of small Doppler shifts in the reflected signals from targets to the moving radar produces a high resolution image that is equivalent to one that would have been collected by a radar with a much larger aperture. 4, record 1, English, - C%2Dband%20synthetic%20aperture%20radar

As SAR [synthetic aperture radar] is a coherent imaging system two forms of change detection may be considered, namely incoherent and coherent change detection. Incoherent change detection identifies changes in the mean backscatter power of a scene typically via an average intensity ratio change statistic. 2, record 7, French, - radar%20imageur%20%C3%A0%20synth%C3%A8se%20d%27ouverture

... imaging radar systems are active sensors that "illuminate" surface features with broadcast microwave energy and record a returned signal. Most imaging radar systems produce microwaves with wavelengths between 1 cm and 1 meter, longer than the wavelengths used in weather radar to detect rain and snow. These longer wavelength microwave signals propagate through the atmosphere and clouds with almost no interaction or weakening. As a result imaging radar systems can be used to map surface features day or night and in almost any weather conditions. These characteristics make radar imaging especially useful in tropical and polar regions where persistent cloud cover hampers optical remote sensing efforts. 2, record 10, English, - surface%20feature

Ultra-Fine mode, available on RADARSAT-2, will acquire images at a spatial resolution of 3 meters. In this mode, the radar operates with sampling rate, therefore the ground coverage is limited(10 to 20 km) to keep the acquisition within the recording limits. The Ultra-Fine imaging mode will provide the best resolution available commercially with a spaceborne SAR system. This capability will allow the ability to detect more clearly targets that are closely spaced and provide enhanced definition of other targets, thereby reducing ambiguities and increasing confidence in the data. 3, record 12, English, - ultra%2Dfine%20mode

The aspect angle... can have a significant influence on the appearance of radar imagery, especially when features in the scene have an organized linear structure, such as agricultural crops or geological structures. When a radar's illumination is oriented perpendicular to geologic features such as faults, lineaments and outcrops, [there is] increased contrast and shadowing of the features in the image results. This is a favourable aspect angle for the image interpreter, as terrain is enhanced. In agricultural applications, fields imaged from different aspect angles may result in different tones on the image because of row or planting direction. Aspect angle can cause imaging geometry to be either enhanced or suppressed. 3, record 13, English, - aspect%20angle

The angle defined by the incident radar beam and the vertical (normal) to the intercepting surface. 3, record 16, English, - incidence%20angle
Record number: 16, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The incidence angle is commonly used to describe the angular relationship between the radar beam and the ground, surface layer or a target. A change of the radar illumination angle often affects the radar backscattering behaviour of a surface or target. The incidence angle changes across the radar image swath; it increases from near range to far range. In the case of satellite radar imagery, the change of incidence angle for flat terrain across the imaging swath tends to be rather small, usually on the order of several degrees. In the case of an inclined surface(slope), the local incidence angle is defined as the angle between the incident radar beam and a line that is normal to that surface. The local incidence angle determining, in part, the brightness, or image tone, for each picture element(pixel) and slope facet, is a key element in the prominent rendition of terrain features in radar imagery. 3, record 16, English, - incidence%20angle

In synthetic aperture radar(SAR) imaging, microwave pulses are transmitted by an antenna towards the Earth surface. The microwave energy scattered back to the spacecraft is measured. The SAR makes use of the radar principle to form an image by utilising the time delay of the backscattered signals. In real aperture radar imaging, the groud resolution is limited by the size of the microwave beam sent out from the antenna. Finer details on the ground can be resolved by using a narrower beam. The beam width is inversely proportional to the size of the antenna, i. e. the longer the antenna, the narrower the beam. 2, record 18, English, - radar%20pulse

2, record 18, French, - impulsion%20radar

This backscatter returns to the radar as a weaker radar echo and is received by the antenna in a specific polarization(horizontal or vertical, not necessarily the same as the transmitted pulse). These echoes are converted to digital data and passed to a data recorder for later processing and display as an image. 3, record 20, English, - imaging%20radar

Polarization of the radar signal is the orientation of the electromagnetic field and is a factor in the way in which the radar signal interacts with ground objects and the resulting energy reflected back. Polarimetric radars, like RADARDAT-2, are able to transmit and receive both horizontal and vertical polarizations.
4, record 21, French, - polarisation
Record number: 21, Textual support number: 3 CONT

Microwave scatterometer... measures the microwave scattering or reflective properties of surfaces. It is also non-imaging, and is specifically designed to measure backscattering. This requires that it detect more detailed spectral information than imaging radar but has reduced spatial resolution and aerial coverage. The surface is scanned in two or more directions, usually by multiple sensors. The primary application of microwave scatterometers is to measure wind vectors(that is, speed and direction) over the ocean surface. This is based on the principle of ocean ’roughness’ being caused by wind and resulting in a characteristic surface pattern which may be identified by its scattering properties. 4, record 26, English, - microwave%20scatterometer

On the 1994 shuttle radar flights, 3-D images were created by flying on a near-repeating orbit, imaging targets twice from different perspectives. This approach works for individual targets, but requires extremely precise navigation on the second pass and wouldn’t be practical on a continuous mapping mission. With single-pass interferometry, two antennas fly in "formation, "collecting two sets of data simultaneously.
