SIAM is a technology that defies the current laws of imaging. It permits scientists to view images much smaller than the wavelength of light and approaching the atomic level, an achievement that has long been considered impossible according to the basic principles of classical optics. SIAM works by shining light through a thin sample onto an ultra-sharp, vibrating tip on the other side. The light scattering from the tip gets altered as the tip approaches within a nanometer from the sample surface, as it vibrates, due to the optical interaction with the local properties of the sample. An image is built up by recording the scattered light as the probe is scanned line by line. The scientists recorded the variations in the scattered light using a very sensitive device--an optical interferometer--which is capable of measuring modulations in light level corresponding to single photons. As the tip moved across the surface, these variations were mapped by a computer into a picture of the surface, showing features such as oil droplets and steps on mica that were only a few atoms in size. 3, record 4, English, - scanning%20interferometric%20apertureless%20microscope

1, record 4, French, - SIAM

In biomedical applications nanoparticles are used as drug carriers or imaging agents. For this purpose the nanoparticle may have a hollow structure providing a central reservoir that can be filled with anticancer drugs, detection agents, or chemicals, known as "reporters, "that can signal if a drug is having a therapeutic effect. The surface of a nanoparticle can also be adorned with various targeting agents, such as antibodies, drugs, imaging agents, and reporters. 2, record 12, French, - radar%20imageur%20%C3%A0%20synth%C3%A8se%20d%27ouverture

... imaging radar systems are active sensors that "illuminate" surface features with broadcast microwave energy and record a returned signal. Most imaging radar systems produce microwaves with wavelengths between 1 cm and 1 meter, longer than the wavelengths used in weather radar to detect rain and snow. These longer wavelength microwave signals propagate through the atmosphere and clouds with almost no interaction or weakening. As a result imaging radar systems can be used to map surface features day or night and in almost any weather conditions. These characteristics make radar imaging especially useful in tropical and polar regions where persistent cloud cover hampers optical remote sensing efforts. 2, record 17, English, - surface%20feature

The incidence angle is commonly used to describe the angular relationship between the radar beam and the ground, surface layer or a target. A change of the radar illumination angle often affects the radar backscattering behaviour of a surface or target. The incidence angle changes across the radar image swath; it increases from near range to far range. In the case of satellite radar imagery, the change of incidence angle for flat terrain across the imaging swath tends to be rather small, usually on the order of several degrees. In the case of an inclined surface(slope), the local incidence angle is defined as the angle between the incident radar beam and a line that is normal to that surface. The local incidence angle determining, in part, the brightness, or image tone, for each picture element(pixel) and slope facet, is a key element in the prominent rendition of terrain features in radar imagery. 3, record 18, English, - incidence%20angle

In synthetic aperture radar(SAR) imaging, microwave pulses are transmitted by an antenna towards the Earth surface. The microwave energy scattered back to the spacecraft is measured. The SAR makes use of the radar principle to form an image by utilising the time delay of the backscattered signals. In real aperture radar imaging, the groud resolution is limited by the size of the microwave beam sent out from the antenna. Finer details on the ground can be resolved by using a narrower beam. The beam width is inversely proportional to the size of the antenna, i. e. the longer the antenna, the narrower the beam. 2, record 19, English, - radar%20pulse

2, record 19, French, - impulsion%20radar

Recently, the so-called "flexo CTP (Computer to Plate) method" has been developed. In this method, a thin, light absorption layer called "Black layer" is formed on the surface of a photosensitive resin plate, and the resultant resin plate is irradiated with a laser to ablate (evaporate) desired portions of the black layer to form a mask bearing an image (formed by the unablated portions of the black layer) on the resin plate directly without separately perparing a mask. Subsequently, the resultant resin plate is imagewise exposed to light through the mask, to thereby crosslink the exposed portions of the resin, followed by developing treatment in which the unexposed portions of the resin (i.e., uncrosslinked resin portions) are washed away with a developing liquid. 4, record 20, English, - black%20layer

Microwave scatterometer... measures the microwave scattering or reflective properties of surfaces. It is also non-imaging, and is specifically designed to measure backscattering. This requires that it detect more detailed spectral information than imaging radar but has reduced spatial resolution and aerial coverage. The surface is scanned in two or more directions, usually by multiple sensors. The primary application of microwave scatterometers is to measure wind vectors(that is, speed and direction) over the ocean surface. This is based on the principle of ocean ’roughness’ being caused by wind and resulting in a characteristic surface pattern which may be identified by its scattering properties. 4, record 25, English, - microwave%20scatterometer

Cloud properties are determined using simultaneous measurements by other EOS instruments such as the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS). Analyses of the CERES data, which build upon the foundation laid by previous missions such as the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment(ERBE), will lead to a better understanding of the role of clouds and the energy cycle in global climate change. 3, record 28, English, - Clouds%20and%20Earth%26rsquo%3Bs%20Radiant%20Energy%20System

Imaging spectrometry... is the field in remote sensing where sensors acquire image data in many, narrow and contiguous wavebands. The aim is to produce on a pixel by pixel basis radiance and reflectance data, which can be used to model physical properties of the Earth surface. Record number: 34, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Imaging spectroscopy has many names in the remote sensing community, including imaging spectrometry, hyperspectral, and ultraspectral imaging. Spectroscopy is the study of electromagnetic radiation. Spectrometry is derived from spectro-photometry, the measure of photons as a function of wavelength, a term used for years in astronomy. However, spectrometry is becoming a term used to indicate the measurement of non-light quantities, such as in mass spectrometry (e.g. Ball, 1995). Hyper means excessive, but no imaging spectrometer in use can hardly be considered hyper-spectral, after all, a couple of hundred channels pales in comparison to truly high resolution spectrometer with millions of channels. Ultraspectral is beyond hyperspectral, a lofty goal that has not yet been reached. ... Researchers at the USGS Spectroscopy Lab are studying and applying methods for identifying and mapping materials through spectroscopic remote sensing (called imaging spectroscopy, hyperspectral imaging, imaging spectrometry, ultraspectral imaging, etc), on the Earth and throughout the solar system using laboratory, airborne and spacecraft spectrometers. 4, record 34, English, - imaging%20spectroscopy
