The continuance of high wage inflation in Europe despite the persistence of high employment may possibly be explained by the hypothesis that the non-accelerating inflation rate of unemployment - above which inflation accelerates and below which it slows - depends, in part, on past levels of unemployment. This hypothesis, which is known as hysteresis by analogy with the natural sciences, is supported by evidence from the United Kingdom and, to a lesser extent, from the Federal Republic of Germany.
