A small tree with finely divided, light green, bipinnate leaves. The leaflets, about 15 pairs, are 1-1. 5 cm. long, opposite, asymmetrical and slightly curved. The flowering heads grow in clusters from branch ends. The individual flowers are white, the head turning brown as it matures. Originaire du Mexique et du nord de l'Amérique Centrale, cette plante est maintenant largement naturalisée sous les tropiques. C'est un arbuste de 0,8 à 5 mètres, aux jeunes rameaux finement poilus. Les feuilles alternes sont pari-bipennées. Les petites fleurs blanches forment des glomérules suivies de gousses plates marron. La leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala) es una leguminosa que puede alcanzar hasta 20 m de altura; pero cuando se utiliza como forraje debe tener una altura menor de tres metros.
