CONT

"At last the promise of the Internet as an educational tool is becoming a reality, "said Stephen A. Ross, Professor of Finance and Economics at the Sloan School of Management-M. I. T. "The attributes of immediacy and comprehensiveness have made the Internet the first tool of choice for exploring new fields and gathering data. Now those same attributes have been harnessed to enable professors and students access to a huge database of problems and exercises. GradeSummit will enable students then to master material and both students and teachers to track progress in ways that were previously impossible.

CONT

Another problem involving the use of words is the question of "conditional assault". If one person points a gun at another and says, "Your money or your life!", it might be argued that it is not assault because the plaintiff may avoid any harm by complying with the condition and parting with his money. It could be contended that the requirement of immediacy is absent. Such an argument is fallacious, however, for one cannot impose conditions upon another, when one has no legal right to do so. It would be otherwise of a landowner said to a trespasser, "Get off my land or I’ll throw you off, "for in such a case, the landowner is only threatening to do what he is entitled to do anyway.

CONT

One of the tutor's distinctive characteristics is that it provides immediate feedback after the student types each code symbol. If the student makes a mistake, the tutor immediately interrupts, provides a message to the student and requires that the student correct the error before moving on.... The effect of this feedback procedure is to prevent floundering by keeping students on a correct solution path. Interestingly, the immediacy of the feedback appears more important in this regard than the content....

CONT

It could be contended that the requirement of immediacy is absent.(...) It is sometimes said that words alone cannot constitute an assault. Normally, this is correct, but it is not invariable so. This notion is a variant of the requirement of immediacy; in other words, a mere threat unaccompanied by some conduct indicating that it is to be executed immediately lacks the element of imminence necessary for liability.
