En matière de choix d'un appareil respiratoire, le NIOSH [National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health] définit la IDLH comme étant la concentration d'une substance dans l'air à laquelle l'exposition risque d'entraîner la mort, de produire immédiatement ou à longue échéance des effets nocifs permanents sur la santé, ou d'empêcher la personne exposée de se soustraire à l'exposition. Cette norme vise à permettre à une personne exposée de quitter les lieux contaminés si son appareil respiratoire fait défaut. Il faut en pareil cas s'efforcer par tous les moyens de quitter les lieux immédiatement.

Il s'agit d'une valeur définie et déterminée par le NIOSH [National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, des États-Unis]. L'abréviation anglaise «IDLH» est souvent utilisée telle quelle dans les ouvrages en langue française.

En este sentido se ha considerado como un parámetro de protección de la salud en cuanto a afectación por toxicidad, el IDLH (peligro inmediato a la salud o a la vida), que se define como un valor máximo en ppm o mg/m³ en concentración de un contaminante tóxico al cual una persona puede escapar sin daños irreversibles a su salud en un período de hasta 30 minutos de exposición. Este valor se utiliza para definir la zona de alto riesgo, lo cual se hace mediante la utilización de modelos de dispersión que permiten determinar qué distancia se requiere en los casos en los que ocurran accidentes en actividades industriales con fugas o derrames.
