A balance having the buoyancy of a float balanced by sliding weights that is used for determining specific gravity (as of liquids or mineral fragments).

Westphal balance-Sauter. Measures the specific gravity/density of solids and liquids : the plummet(weight) is immersed in the liquid of unknown density; alternatively an unknown density is immersed in liquid of known density; the loss of weight is measured on the balance.

A Mohr-Westphal density balance. This instrument was first described in 1832 by the German chemist Carl Friedrich Mohr. It is a balance with two arms, where the equilibrium is reached by adding weight on a tray. This type of instrument was modified by G. Westphal who replaced the tray with an adjustable counterweight.

An airlift pump is a pump that has low suction and moderate discharge of liquid and entrained solids. The pump injects compressed air at the bottom of the discharge pipe which is immersed in the liquid. The compressed air mixes with the liquid causing the air-water mixture to be less dense than the rest of the liquid around it and therefore is displaced upwards through the discharge pipe by the surrounding liquid of higher density.

A Bx or BCx horizon of high bulk density and consistency that is firm and brittle when moist, and hard to extremely hard when dry. Commonly it has bleached fracture planes separating very coarse prismatic units, and frequently the secondary structure is platy. Usually the fragic horizon is similar in color to the parent material but differs from it in structure, consistency, and bulk density. Air-dried clods slake when immersed in water. The upper boundary is usually abrupt and clear but the lower boundary is diffuse. The fragic horizon does not meet the criteria of a podzolic B horizon but may meet those of a Bt(Btx) horizon.

Instability which can arise when an electric current is fed through a plasma with a helical density distribution immersed in a magnetic field. This will give rise to screw-shaped ion and electron clouds which move in opposite directions along the field lines and produce a charge separation. This in turn generates transverse drift motions, electric fields and growing disturbances.
