The plate is first covered with an acid-resistant resinous substance. The artist then takes a finely pointed needle and draws the design out of this resinous ground. The drawing instrument does not cut into the metal surface. The image which will print is represented by the areas in which the copper of the plate has been exposed. The plate is then immersed in an acid bath. The acid eats into the plate only in those areas not protected by the ground. Marine biofilm : how quickly does it form? Immediately, when a surface is immersed in the sea, a conditioning film of organic molecules forms. This begins after a few seconds of immersion and is considered as molecular fouling. In the hours and days that follow, bacteria colonise the surface and micro colonies occur. These colonies spread outwards and upwards to form irregular structures. At this stage other microfouling appear, e. g. microalgae and fungi... The biofilm then matures and new species enter and grow, organic and inorganic debris is incorporated and solute gradients develop leading to a special heterogeneity. At this point three things can occur : The biofilm may slough off due the hydrodynamics of the environment; Organisms may begin to graze on the biofilm; Larger organisms such as algae and molluscs may establish on it, this is macrofouling. 4, record 9, English, - microfouling

The Keronite coating process resembles anodising in that it uses an electric power supply and an electrolyte bath. However, it is significantly different from anodising in that it produces much harder, thicker layers while using environmentally less harmful alkali electrolytes and a specially modulated AC voltage.
