Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The tendency for a compound to divide its time between two immiscible solvents(solvents such as hexane and water which won’t mix) is known as partition. Paper chromatography using a non-polar solvent is therefore a type of partition chromatography. 4, record 1, English, - paper%20chromatography
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Paper chromatography ... is used widely for qualitative identification, although quantitative analysis can be done. A sample is spotted onto a strip of filter paper with a micropipet, and the chromatogram is "developed" by placing the bottom of the paper (but not the sample spot) in a suitable solvent ... The solvent is drawn up the paper by capillary action, and the sample components move up the paper at different rates, depending on their solubility and their degree of retention by the paper. 5, record 1, English, - paper%20chromatography

2, record 1, Spanish, - cromatograf%C3%ADa%20en%20papel

Aqueous Film-Forming Foaming Agents (AFFF). Aqueous film-forming foam agents are composed of synthetically produced materials that form air foams similar to those produced by the protein-based materials. In addition, these foaming agents are capable of forming water solution films on the surface of flammable liquids, hence the term "aqueous film-forming foam" (AFFF). 8, record 5, English, - aqueous%20film%2Dforming%20foam

While a number of different types of foam are commercially available for fighting chemical fires, only two types of foam are considered in this book :"ordinary" foam, such as AFFF or protein foam and "alcohol" foam, i. e., alcohol resistant foam. 1, record 5, French, - mousse%20de%20type%20A%2EF%2EF%2EF%2E

The prefixes "ortho-," "meta-" and "para-," along with their corresponding abbreviations ("o-," "m-" and "p-"), appear in italics and are ignored in alphabetizing. According to the actual chemical nomenclature rules in organic chemistry (in 2003), the numbers designating the positions of the disubstitution groups (1,2- for "ortho-," 1,3- for "meta-" and 1,4- for "para-") are to be preferred to the symbols "o-," "m-" and "p-." Furthermore, the prefixes "ortho-," "meta-" and "para-" should not be used anymore, and their corresponding abbreviations ("o-," "m-," and "p-") will soon be judged to be avoided, if not totally condemned. 1, record 11, English, - 4%2D%28propan%2D2%2Dyl%29benzaldehyde

Recent work... presents a new and simple way to improve enzyme stabilization : enzyme dehydration. In this study, the catalysis by porcine pancreatic lipase of transesterification between tributyryl glycerol(trybutyrin) and various alcohols was investigated. Since both substrate and product are water immiscible, the investigators employed 2M alcohol solution in trybutyrin as the reaction medium.... By replacing the aqueous medium with the reaction medium(2M m-heptanol in trybutyrin) significant improvement in thermal stability was obtained. 4, record 18, English, - dehydratation

An acoustic mixer, used to ultrasonically mix metallic melts, was developed for the experiment. The mixer allowed low-temperature processing of the immiscible material : the two components were heated to just above their respected melt temperatures.(Previously, alloys had been heated above the miscibility gap to mix the components.) Thus, the benefits of acoustic mixing included(1) a reduction in experiment power requirements and(2) a shortened sample cooling time. These benefits were important because of the short low-gravity period(approximately 6 minutes) available during the TEXUS sounding rocket mission. 2, record 29, English, - acoustic%20mixer

Another very clever way-out was pioneered by the blind physicist Plateau already in the XIX century : the isodense tank(Plateau tank) with an immiscible liquid to balance the(high) hydrostatic gradient. But on both cases(millimetric-size liquid bridges and Plateau simulation) the mechanical behaviour(statics and dynamics) of liquid bridges is difficult to investigate under ground conditions because both techniques make experimentation difficult, imprecise and can mask effects only measurable under reduced gravity conditions. That explains why so many experiments with liquid bridges have been performed under microgravity since the pioneering demonstrations in Skylab in 1974, and how different the real behaviour of liquid bridges in space has been found. 2, record 30, English, - Plateau%20tank

In the NRC [National Research Council of Canada] Solvent Extraction Soil Remediation(SESR) Process, solvent extraction of the soil contaminant(s) occurs concurrently with agglomeration of the dispersed soil particles. Soil is initially mixed with a bulk liquid phase which must be a good solvent for the contaminant but be non-wetting with respect to the particulate surfaces. A minor amount of a second liquid is added which must be immiscible with the suspending phase but preferentially wet the soil particles. For the remediation of contaminated soils the two liquids of choice are a hydrocarbon solvent and water, respectively. 1, record 36, English, - solvent%20extraction%20soil%20remediation%20process

More importantly it can treat these materials when the solid matrix contains significant amounts of fine particles, including clay and clay-like materials. 3, record 36, English, - solvent%20extraction%20soil%20remediation%20process

Gravimetric Loop machine... This is essentially for use in a binary fluid circuit... Three parallel fluid columns of considerable height(64 m in a prototype) are arranged to form two loops, the central column being common to both. In the left-hand loop a refrigerant(e. g. freon 11) is pumped counter-clockwise round the loop : in the right-hand loop, water is circulated clockwise by gravimetric forces. The bottom of the water loop is heated by geothermal fluid. The heated water, on contact with the freon at the bottom of the central column, causes the latter to boil, and the released freon bubbles give buoyancy to the fluid in this column so that the water and boiling freon rise to the top where the two fluids, being immiscible, are separated... The different densities of the fluids in the right-hand and central columns provide the driving head for the turbine. 1, record 53, English, - gravimetric%20loop%20machine
