A small percentage of HIV-infected [human immunodeficiency virus-infected] individuals not on ART [antiretroviral treatment] do not develop significant progression of disease. These individuals tend to remain asymptomatic with stable CD4+ T-cell counts and low levels of HIV [human immunodeficiency virus] viremia. Long-term non-progressors are individuals without significant disease progression for many years while maintaining a minimal CD4+ T-cell count of 500 cells/mm3, likely as a result of sustained immune control limiting their HIV viremia to fewer than 10, 000 copies/mL. 4, record 3, English, - long%2Dterm%20non%2Dprogressor

In 2012, the Supreme Court of Canada (SCC) held that the criminal law imposes a duty on a person to disclose HIV positive status before sexual activity that poses a "realistic possibility of transmission" so that the HIV negative sexual partner has the opportunity to choose whether to assume the risk of being infected with HIV. "HIV non-disclosure" is the term used to describe these cases, i.e., criminal cases involving transmission, or exposure to the realistic possibility of transmission, of HIV through sexual activity. 3, record 27, English, - HIV%20non%2Ddisclosure

The human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) genome encodes at least seven groups of viral proteins. These groups of proteins include the three classes of polypeptides present in the majority of animal retroviruses : 1. structural, nonenvelope polypeptides encoded by the gag gene; 2. enzymes required for virion replication(reverse transcriptase/r) and for cleavage of viral precursor proteins(protease/pr), both encoded by the pol gene; 3. envelope polypeptides encoded by env gene. In addition, HIV's possess genes that encode four sets of polypeptides not found in the majority of typical retroviruses. These include a transactivating regulator of RNA translation(tat), a cis-acting downregulator of RNA transcription(nef), a regulator that modulates the expression of structural proteins(rev), a protein that modulates viral infectivity(vif), and two proteins(vpr, vpu) whose functions are still unclear. M.E. 2, record 51, French, - neuroleukine

SFV [simian foamy virus] is so called because it causes cells to clump together and look, on a slide, like foamy bubbles. It has been called "a virus in search of a disease" and has been tentatively linked to several diseases but without any real evidence. 4, record 83, English, - simian%20foamy%20virus

Simian foamy viruses are commonly found in primates (monkeys), cows, cats and other organisms. ... About 70 to 90 percent of non-human primates born in captivity have SFV. Animals with SFV do not display symptoms or become ill. However, recent research suggests that some primates may be pre-disposed to other viruses after being infected with SFV. People who have had contact with non-human primates can become infected with SFV. 5, record 83, English, - simian%20foamy%20virus
Record number: 83, Textual support number: 3 CONT
Like HIV [human immunodeficiency virus], SFV [simian foamy virus] is a retrovirus, a type that is particularly worrying because it can inject its own genetic material into the DNA of the cells that it infects, making it impossible to eradicate.... cross-species transmission of retroviruses and other pathogens could spark future epidemics similar to HIV. 4, record 83, English, - simian%20foamy%20virus

There are two types of HIV: HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 is responsible for the vast majority of AIDS in the United States. HIV-2, seen more often in western Africa, has a slower course than HIV-1. There are many strains of both types and the virus mutates rapidly, a trait that has made it especially difficult for researchers to find an effective treatment or vaccine. 1, record 99, English, - VIH%2D2
