CONT

Peptide vaccines are based on in vitro-synthesized peptides of 20–30 amino acids, known to be highly immunogenic and to trigger the desired immune response. While peptide vaccines could limit significantly the chances for allergenic [or] reactogenic complications, they require carriers and adjuvants to counterbalance the low-molecular natureof oligopeptides [...]

Subject field(s)
  • Immunology
DEF

Exhibiting immunocompetence: the ability to produce a normal immune response following exposure to an antigen.

CONT

In an immunocompetent individual, the immune response is initiated when introduced to an external agent that possesses an immunogenic structural epitope. The appropriate response depends upon the recognition by surface receptors of B and T lymphocytes of the foreignness of the introduced agent.

DEF

Mechanisms of immunological escape address the central paradox of tumour immunology which is why neoplasms which are demonstrably immunogenic elude the effector arm of the immune response. Immunological escape may occur when the balance between factors favouring tumour growth and destruction is tilted in favour of the tumour.... The factors that may contribute to immunological escape include tumour kinetics, antigenic modulation, antigen masking, blocking factors, tolerance, genetic factors, tumour products, and growth factors.

Domaine(s)

CONT

DEF

Cooperation between the different types of cells involved in an immune response occurs at several levels. Phagocytes and antigen-presenting cells take up antigen in the periphery, process it and transport it to secondary lymphoid organs(spleen, lymph node, etc.) where it is presented to lymphocytes in an immunogenic form. B cells produce antibody which binds to Fc receptors on phagocytes(as well as mast cells and K cells) so facilitating their uptake of antigen. T cells stimulated by antigen produce a variety of antigen specific and non-specific factors termed lymphokines, which help B cells to produce phagocytes to deal more effectively with pathogens.

CONT
