Cardiac concussion... is a relatively uncommon and frequently mortal condition... It has well-defined characteristics that clearly distinguish it from cardiac contusion. This last condition occurs far more frequently following blunt thoracic traumas. "Commotio cordis" results from a sudden and blunt impact to the precordial area that alters the normal cardiac electrical activity and causes cardiac arrest or sudden death, without evidence of anatomical and structural cardiac injuries. The impact causing "commotio cordis" is generally of low energy and low speed. Death is caused by a cardiac arrhythmia, and there is evidence that ventricular fibrillation is the most common in fatal cases. 4, record 2, English, - cardiac%20concussion

The total mortality rate estimated from the lengths in the scientific surveys, the number of fishing days of a fleet per season, the percentage of immature individuals as well as the amount of gear per fishing area are indicators of fishing pressure on a population. For example, a mean total mortality rate estimated during a period when fishing would not have had an impact on the health of the population can serve as a target reference point. Recommendations aimed at reducing the level of withdrawal can then be issued when this target reference is exceeded. 2, record 5, English, - fishing%20pressure

2, record 5, French, - pression%20de%20p%C3%AAche

With the development in recent years of an awareness of our planetary environment, the term "environmental physiology" is gradually taking on a different meaning. A few years ago, it simply referred to the study of temperature regulation and adaptations to extreme environments.... Environmental physiology now embraces a much wider area of study and increasingly incorporates the effects of man's control of natural phenomena. The impact of pollutants, whether they be physical or chemical, on physiology systems is developing into an important part of "environmental physiology. " 6, record 22, English, - ecophysiology

The major cities of the economically powerful Western nations constitute the nodes of these networks, enabling these nations to draw upon the ecological capital of all other nations to provide food for their populations, energy and materials for their economies, and even land, air and water to absorb their waste by-products. This ecological capital, which may be found thousands of miles from the regions in which it is used, forms the shadow ecology of an economy. The oceans, the atmosphere (climate), and other common assets also form part of this shadow ecology, which includes the environmental resources a country draws from other countries and the global common assets. 3, record 39, English, - shadow%20ecology

Plan to revamp town over 10 years. Tackling crime and anti-social behaviour and also promoting the River Severn as a tourist attraction are among the key aims to transform Shrewsbury town centre over the next 10 years. Greater management of the town's evening economy and the development of a wide range of leisure activities are also high on the list of objectives set out by the borough council. The points are made in the final draft of a blueprint aimed at shaping the future of the town. The strategy, prepared by Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council, aims to improve the economic, social, environmental and community well-being of the area and have a direct impact on everyone living in Shrewsbury and Atcham. 3, record 51, English, - revamp%20town

Test for Special Form Radioactive Material.... Percussion test. The material is placed on a lead sheet which is supported by a smooth essentially unyielding surface and struck by the flat face of a steel billet so as to produce an impact equivalent to that resulting from a free fall of 1. 4 kg through 1 m. The flat face of the billet is 25 mm in diameter with the edges rounded off to a radius of 3 mm. The lead, of hardness number 3. 5 to 4. 5 on the Vickers scale and not more than 25 mm thick, covers an area greater than that covered by the material. A fresh surface of lead is used for each impact. The billet strikes the material so as to cause maximum damage. 1, record 62, English, - percussion%20test

There are two forms of injection into deep geologic formations that have been suggested or used for LLW disposal: hydrofracture and deep well injection. Both methods are primarily useful only for liquid or finely ground wastes. They both take precautions to prevent contaminating useful aquifers by carefully selecting the geologic formations into which the waste is injected. Hydrofracture disposal also uses a very insoluble waste form. Generally, hydrofracture involves injection of a mixture of waste and liquid grouting materials under high pressure into a deep layered rock formation such as shale. The injected material causes layers of rock to separate and the material forms flat "sheets" extending out from the injection well. The grout causes some surface uplift near the injection well. 1, record 65, English, - hydrofracture%20disposal

Because of difficulty in transporting liquid wastes safely, the hydrofracture facility must be located near the source of the waste. A hydrofracture site requires large, generally impermeable(to nearby aquifers) layered formations that fracture horizontally. The surface area needed and visual impact of a hydrofracture facility are relatively small. Major barriers to nuclide release are the grout(waste form) and the geologic formation used. Perhaps the greatest problem with hydraulic injection is that there is little control of fracture propagation and it is not possible to define the final geometry of the grout/waste sheets from the surface. 2, record 65, English, - hydrofracture%20disposal

Prevalence : This is defined as the extent to which the impact may eventually extend as in the cumulative effects of a number of stream crossings. Each one taken separately might represent a localized impact of small importance and magnitude but a number of such crossings could result in a widespread effect. Coupled with the determination of cumulative effects is the remoteness of an effect from the activity causing it. The deterioration of fish production resulting from access roads could affect sport fishing in an area many miles away and for months or years after project completion. 1, record 74, English, - prevalence

1, record 74, French, - facteur%20cumulatif

Historically, in Nova Scotia, most environmental problems are the result of small, disparate projects which cumulatively have a significant impact on the environment. Recognizing that most of these problems are a consequence of inappropriate land use, the Department has recommended to the Deputy Minister's Land Use Committee and the Planning Act Review Committee, that municipalities should be given greater authority to regulate activities within their area of jurisdiction which could affect environmental resources. Submissions made by NSDOE and other departments to the Planning Act Review Committee have suggested the need for greater municipal control over the subdivision and development of land, aggregate resource zones, and surface water for drinking supplies. 1, record 80, English, - aggregate%20resource%20zone

1, record 80, French, - zone%20aux%20ressources%20multiples
