IMPACT BOTTOM [13 records]

Record 1 2022-10-31

English

Subject field(s)
  • Collaboration with the FAO
  • Commercial Fishing
  • Ecosystems
DEF

The catching of fish or shellfish that are found on or close to the seabed, using any gear type likely to come in contact with the seafloor or benthic organisms during the normal course of operations.

CONT

Since gear impacts are affected by such factors such as the type of benthic communities over which they are fished, restricting bottom fishing from specific areas would reduce impact on particularly sensitive areas.... the policy for managing the impacts of fishing on sensitive benthic areas... can be used to protect ocean-floor habitat.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Collaboration avec la FAO
  • Pêche commerciale
  • Écosystèmes
CONT

  • Commercial Fishing
DEF

[A technique used] for fish harvesting [in which] a large net, [held open by two large boards attached to its sides,] is dragged along the bottom or up in the water column behind a towing vessel.

CONT

The effects of repetitive otter trawling on a gravel bottom ecosystem were evaluated... It is one of very few multi-year otter trawling impact experiments conducted on gravel seabeds, a habitat type that is generally regarded to be particularly vulnerable to bottom fishing gear.

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Rolling Stock (Railroads)
CONT

The majority of the tank cars exhibited impact damage... on the top portion of at least [one] head. This is not unexpected, as most of these cars came to rest on their sides, thereby bringing the top portion of the heads closer to the ground and increasing the probability of impacts with objects such as rail, couplers, and body bolsters. A full-head shield would have been beneficial, as half-head shields protect only the bottom portion of the head.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Matériel roulant (Chemins de fer)
CONT

CONT

Bullet traps can be grouped into three broad categories, deceleration, impact, and friction, though there is some blurring of the dividing line. Deceleration traps use a circular or helical chamber to allow the bullet to spin inside until it has shed sufficient velocity to drop through a recovery port in the bottom.

If it is assumed that all of the sediment dumped settles at the moment of impact with the bottom and that the deposit formed is shaped like a spherical cap, then the mound generated would be 6 cm high.

Truitt (1986) obtained similar results (material settled within a 30-m radius; 2 to 4% of the material was "lost" into the water column; see Table 6), but he also demonstrated that expansion of the radial turbidity current can be limited by releasing sediment at the site of a depression (site floor lower than the surrounding floor).

CONT

CONT

(ESWL) works in something like a high-tech Ribe Goldberg sequence. The patient, usually anesthetized from the waist down to obliterate the mild discomfort of the shocks, is strapped onto a pallet and lowered into a specially designed tub full of water. X-rays reveal the precise location of the kidney stone on two television monitors. The physician pushes a button, and a spark plug at the bottom of the tank fires, vaporizing some of the water, which then creates a pressure wave. After bouncing off an elliptical brass reflector that is aimed at the patient's kidney stone, the wave passes harmlessly through the patient's tissues but creates a shattering impact when it collides with the hard stone. More than a thousand individual shocks may be required to completely break up a stone, which will wash away in the patient's urine after it disintegrates.

Subject field(s)
  • Types of Concrete
CONT

Fiber- and Fabric-Reinforced Concrete. Historically fibers have been used to reinforce many different types of building materials. Some classic uses are straw in bricks, animal hair in plaster, and asbestos in cement. More recently, however, fiber-reinforced concrete has concentrated on steel, glass, and plastic fibers being placed in mortars and concretes to improve their material characteristics ....

OBS

In another case, rather than use separated discrete sized fibers for reinforcement, duPont has experimented with their nonwoven fabric Typar as a reinforcement material for concrete. Placing a sheet of fabric one-third of the distance up from the bottom of a 12 by 12 by 3/4 inch thick concrete tile, impact strengths were measured against control tiles. It was found that 5 foot-pounds were required to break the unreinforced section, while 20 foot-pounds were required for 2 once per square yard Typar-reinforced tiles....
