Dynamic tests are specifically concerned with landing gear performance and CEAT has four specialized machines for this purpose. The landing gear is attached to an adjustable ’load’ platform running in vertical guides. Landing impact is simulated by dropping this assembly at a controlled speed on to a rotating drum which provides the effect of movement over the ground. The largest of these four machines, developed and built at CEAT, permits dynamic tests to be carried out on the main landing gear of aircraft with a landing weight in excess of 120 tonnes. 1, record 4, English, - load%20platform

From its close orbit above the tiny nucleus, Rosetta will be able to send back the most detailed images and information ever obtained of a comet. When a suitable landing site has been chosen, about a month after global mapping starts, the orbiter will release a 100 kg lander onto the comet's solid surface. Touchdown must be quite slow-less than one metre per second-to allow for the almost negligible gravitational pull of the tiny nucleus. In order to ensure that the lander does not bounce and disappear into space, an anchoring harpoon will be fired into the surface immediately on impact. 2, record 6, English, - anchoring%20harpoon

Penetrators as tools for exploring extraterrestrial solid surfaces have been developed for a couple of space missions to Mars, the Moon, comets, and the icy satellites of the giant planets. They are particularly useful to characterize the strength properties and the layering of planetary nearsurface layers. Being currently engaged with the development of an instrumented "anchoring harpoon" for the lander of ESA’s comet mission Rosetta, we propose similar devices for application aboard future Mars lander missions. 3, record 6, English, - anchoring%20harpoon

The application of airbags to spacecraft landing systems has been limited in the past. This can be explained by the complexity of the impact behaviour of the airbag system. 2, record 7, French, - coussin%20gonflable

In addition to environmental conditions during the operations on the surface of Mars the MIDD will have to be able to sustain the loads which occur prior to deployment from the lander. Since recent and currently studied designs for Mars landers in many cases use a "semi-hard" landing technique, the shock incurred during impact on the surface becomes the driver for sizing and qualification of components rather than the launch loads or the quasistatic loads during entry into the martian atmosphere. The MARS PATHFINDER lander, being the most prominent example of a semi-hard lander since it is the only one thus far having been built and flown, experienced an actual impact velocity of 18 m/s and a maximum deceleration(first bounce) of around 18 g, both values being lower than the hardware had been designed for. 2, record 8, English, - semi%2Dhard%20lander

The single leaf cantilever spring steel type of main landing gear is used extensively on Cessna airplanes. The gear consists of a single strap of Chrome Vanadium Steel bent to form the shape of the complete undercarriage structure. It is attached to the fuselage in a cradle bulkhead by bolts. It is capable of storing energy in initial impact, thereby producing quite low load factors. Low maintenance, simplicity and long service life characterize this gear type. 2, record 11, English, - single%20spring%20leaf%20cantilever%20landing%20gear
