Second impact syndrome can result from even a very mild concussion that occurs days or weeks after the initial concussion. What is Second Impact Syndrome? In patients who sustain a second concussion when the first one has not fully healed, the brain loses its ability to auto regulate intracranial and cerebral perfusion pressure. This may lead to cerebral edema(severe swelling of the brain) and possible brain herniation. Loss of consciousness after the initial injury followed by secondary brain damage creates ionic fluxes, acute metabolic changes, and cerebral blood flow alterations. All of these characteristics enhance the vulnerability of the brain and greatly increase the risk of death, even if the second injury was far less intense.

Bosik Consultants Limited operates the National Research Council’s Flight Impact Simulator Facility in Ottawa, ON. The facility houses a large pneumatic cannon (10-inch barrel diameter, measuring approximately 75 feet in length) employed to propel birds to their targets in order to simulate bird strikes with aircraft components. Aircraft components typically impacted include windshields, wings and empennage leading edges.

NRC' s [National Research Council of Canada] flight impact simulators or bird guns have three parts : a storage reservoir(tank at the back) pressurized to the test pressure; a step chamber(half of the reservoir's pressure) ;and a barrel with sabot arrestor. The sabot, which holds the projectile, must withstand the launch, protect the projectile and crush the muzzle arrestor so that nothing but the projectile continues on to the target. Adjusting the thickness of the sabot lining helps various sizes of projectiles to fit in the barrel. The firing mechanism uses a double diaphragm method. Each diaphragm is made of very thin plastic material(Mylar).

The fuel-oil heater serves a twofold purpose, it is designed to cool the oil and preheat the fuel for combustion.

Bell 212 helicopter... Engine power loss. Engine tear-down inspections revealed that the number two engine was not operating on impact and the fuel oil heater had malfunctioned, however this malfunction alone would not cause the engine to stop operating. If fuel pressure upstream from the engine driven boost pump is lost when the fuel oil heater has malfunctioned(allowing the fuel to be heated), the engine will stop operating. Since the investigation revealed no other reason for the engine to stop operating, it is likely that the number two engine shut down due to a loss of line fuel pressure provided by the electrical boost pumps, coincident with the malfunctioning fuel oil heater.

The physician pushes a button, and a spark plug at the bottom of the tank fires, vaporizing some of the water, which then creates a pressure wave. After bouncing off an elliptical brass reflector that is aimed at the patient's kidney stone, the wave passes harmlessly through the patient's tissues but creates a shattering impact when it collides with the hard stone. More than a thousand individual shocks may be required to completely break up a stone, which will wash away in the patient's urine after it disintegrates.

Extrusion stretch blow moulding(ESBM). A parison is extruded and as the preblow mould closes, a mandrel descends to form the bottle neck. The parison is subsequently pinched and inflated, then conditioned at the optimum temperature for orientation in the next stage.
