Two developments that had an especially important impact [on music in the 1960s] were quotation music and minimal music. The former, which involved the use of earlier music as material for new compositions, represented an idea with a long tradition in Western music. Quotation had been a standard procedure during the medieval and Renaissance eras and it persisted in occasional use throughout the common-practice period.... Quotation music of the 1960s was set apart, then, not so much by how pervasive it was(though it was certainly that) but by the fact that the borrowed material consumed such a large portion of the musical structure that its "foreign" nature was emphasized to such a marked degree.... Not uncommonly, entire compositions were made up of quotations. 2, record 2, English, - quotation%20music

The general theory of structures is based on a static calculation, which means to say that both the structure and the loads acting on it are at rest, or may simulate this condition because they act slowly. But the structure and load acting on it cannot always be deemed to be at rest, because the dynamic effect of forces may cause accelerations in it, which lead to failure. Wind and earthquakes are forces with a significant dynamic effect on bridges but it must also be borne in mind that traffic loads are moving and, in fact, the dynamic effect of these loads are taken into account via impact factors... 2, record 4, English, - traffic%20load

Cultural discontinuity refers to the lack of cohesion between two or more cultures. Upon entry into school, differences in the functional use of language among culturally and linguistically diverse children have been found to account for the discontinuity they experience. Because children come to school socialized to language in culture-specific ways, the discourse structure and communication styles used by many children from culturally and linguistically diverse populations is incongruent with that of the teacher's style of interaction. This discontinuity between home and school language socialization patterns can have a negative impact on academic achievement. 1, record 5, English, - cultural%20discontinuity

Architectural technicians hold a sort of hybrid role in the field of planning and drafting building schematics. Generally speaking, these technicians are concerned with the technical and scientific areas which affect architectural design. When employed in architectural firms, they are typically tasked with assisting with sections of drawings that must be scientifically precise and conform to certain technological specifications. These technicians also work in engineering firms, where the goal is to incorporate scientific and technological information from engineering design teams into working drafts, drawings, and schematics. For architectural firms, these technicians maintain roles which involve investigating necessary technology and limitations in construction. They typically work with contractors and construction design teams to assess structural needs which may be based on the function of the building, as well as examine expected "stressors" which may impact the completed structure. The technicians then develop drawings using computer-aided drafting(CAD) for the small, discrete sections which require this special attention. 1, record 7, English, - architectural%20technician

There are still flaws remaining in the structure composing the Alliance that threaten the relevance of the institution and its operational functions in the execution of the expeditionary military engagements necessary for forward defense. These limitations will impact future deployments, but in the aftermath of the transatlantic rift, the on-going military operations, and the ever-present threat of transatlantic terrorism encourage an atmosphere of cooperation. If the Allies chose to continue this reconciliation, NATO has the potential to serve a premier role in international security and in a forward defense of Europe... 2, record 8, English, - forward%20defence

While carbon nanotubes(CNT) and carbon nanofibers(CNF) are both hollow, nanometer in scale, and produced in a similar manner, there are distinct differences which significantly impact their performance and ability to be processed. The primary differences between the materials are morphology, size, ease of processing, and price. Carbon nanofibers, also known as Stacked-Cup Carbon Nanotubes(SCCNT), have a unique morphology in that graphene planes are canted from the fiber axis, resulting in exposed edge planes on the interior and exterior surfaces of the fiber. CNTs, on the other hand, typically resemble an assembly of concentric cylinders of graphene. To illustrate the difference in morphology, Figure 1... shows a side by side comparison of A) multi-walled carbon nanotubes [MWCNT] and B) stacked-cup carbon nanotubes.... Figure 1. A) Multi-wall CNTs are composed of concentric cylinders of graphene where the basal planes form an inert surface. B) The stacked-cup structure of CNF has exposed graphitic edge planes along its length, providing opportunities for chemical modification of the surface for covalent bonding directly with the matrix. 7, record 21, English, - cup%2Dstacked%20carbon%20nanofiber

To assess the impact of human activity on these ecosystems--and to protect the estimated 27 000 species of plants and animals that live in them--a team of 40 scientists from Environment Canada and the Quebec Ministry of the Environment have created an Internet atlas of the river's ecology and biology.... Known as the Biodiversity Portrait of the St. Lawrence River, the atlas covers the Quebec region of the river.... Users can take a virtual tour of the St. Lawrence by viewing maps, charts and text summaries that describe the region from several different standpoints, including ecological structure, biodiversity, human impacts, and priority conservation areas. The atlas's ecological mapping system divides the river into natural regions and riparian landscapes, and allows users to explore at an even closer range by incorporating a georeferenced grid that breaks each terrestrial region into 100 km2 parcels. 1, record 25, English, - ecological%20mapping

Improved uniformity of the laser for-al spot profile is a necessary criterion for the success of high intensity laser fusion and to improve the quality of data from moderate intensity laser driven shock experiments in solids. Recently developed laser smoothing techniques rely on both temporal smoothing and thermal smoothing to produce uniform ablation pressures on the target surface. Thermal smoothing is not effective during the low intensity portion of a laser pulse and the resultant shock structure mirrors the residual laser nonuniformities. The impact of the first(nonuniform) shock can be diminished by using foam layers, a precursor flash, shallow angles of incidence, and by adiabatically compressing the target with a temporally long, slowly rising laser pulse. 1, record 27, English, - thermal%20smoothing

Although the average effective interest rate on the federal debt is expected to decline over the 1992-93 to 1995-96 period, its impact on public debt charges is offset by the higher borrowing requirements. The decline in the average effective interest rate is due to the term structure of the outstanding debt. About half of the debt is of a short-term nature and rolled-over within a year. The remaining debt has an average term structure of about four-and-a-half years. The average effective interest rate, therefore, should continue to decline as the longer-term debt matures and is re-issued at the current lower interest rates. 1, record 34, English, - roll%2Dover

The present work aims at trying out Acoustic Impact Technique as a possible means of deployment at field level for the purpose of flaw detection in composite helicopter blades. The principle underlying Acoustic Impact Testing is simple. The sound produced when a structure is tapped is mainly at the frequencies of major structural modes of vibration, which are structural properties. Any difference in the sound is necessarily due to modification affected to the force input by the defect in the structure. A study of the force time history of response or its fast fourier transform makes it possible to locate and detect sub surface flaws. 3, record 36, English, - acoustic%20impact%20technique

The single leaf cantilever spring steel type of main landing gear is used extensively on Cessna airplanes. The gear consists of a single strap of Chrome Vanadium Steel bent to form the shape of the complete undercarriage structure. It is attached to the fuselage in a cradle bulkhead by bolts. It is capable of storing energy in initial impact, thereby producing quite low load factors. Low maintenance, simplicity and long service life characterize this gear type. 2, record 50, English, - single%20spring%20leaf%20cantilever%20landing%20gear

Structure-Borne Sound Transmission. Acoustical energy transmission from sound sources to distant parts of the structure via the structure itself is often a major problem in building acoustics.... Impacts and vibrations can be transmitted through the floor-ceiling assemblies... if proper precautions are not taken.... a good carpet over a good pad will provide sufficient impact isolation against the sounds of footfalls, heel clicks, and dropped objects. 3, record 51, English, - structure%2Dborne%20sound%20transmission
