The Tropical Meteorology Research Programme is designed to promote and coordinate research activities of Members in high priority areas of tropical meteorology. Emphasis is on the weather system scale, except for monsoons and drought related studies, which emphasis variability and prediction at the regional and seasonal scale. Initially this programme was called the World Climate Impact Studies Programme(WCIP), overall objective of which was to assess the sensitivity of socio-economic sectors to climate variability and change. In 1991, additional task of developing options for socio-economic response strategies related to climate variability and change was added to the programme. ... of the World Meteorological Organization. The Atmospheric Research and Environment Programme promotes atmospheric research and development and technology transfer between Members. It includes the Global Atmosphere Watch, which integrates monitoring and research activities carried out under the Global Ozone Observing System(GO3OS) and the Background Air Pollution Monitoring Network(BAPMoN) and serves as a system to detect changes in the composition of the atmosphere, an important prerequisite to understanding human impact on the atmosphere and addressing important aspects of sustainable development.
