An impact test to determine the ductility of a metal; a freely swinging pendulum is allowed to strike and break a notched specimen laid loosely on a support; the work done by the pendulum is obtained by comparing the position of the pendulum before release with the position to which it swings after breaking the specimen.

Toughness is traditionally measured using the Charpy impact test. However, modern steels are so tough that the small Charpy specimen is simply bent rather than fractured, making it difficult or impossible to characterize fracture using this test.

At various temperatures, specimens are tested by a specified impact device in a cantilever beam test mode. Brittleness is defined as "that temperature estimated statistically, at which 50 percent of the specimens would fail in the specified test".

The size of the resulting hole is measured and qualitatively rated from one fabric to another. The test attempts to simulate the dropping of stone subbase directly on fabric. Though not an ideal test, it typifies attempts being made to assess impact resistance of construction fabrics.
