IMPACT VELOCITY [17 records]

Record 1 2026-04-27

English

Subject field(s)
  • Astronautics
DEF

The alighting of a spacecraft on the sea.

CONT

Splashdown occurs at a velocity of about 80 feet per second(24 meters per second). It's not exactly a smooth impact, but that's slow enough for the capsule to thwack into the ocean and absorb shock from the impact without damaging its structure, its payload or any astronauts inside.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Astronautique
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Guns (Land Forces)
  • Field Artillery
DEF

[A] munition fuze used with artillery munitions, typically projectiles fired by guns … howitzers and mortars.

CONT

Artillery fuzes are tailored to function in the special circumstances of artillery projectiles. The relevant factors are the projectile's initial rapid acceleration, high velocity and usually rapid rotation, which affect both safety and arming requirements and options, and the target may be moving or stationary. Artillery fuzes may be initiated by a timer mechanism, impact or detection of proximity to the target, or a combination of these.

Subject field(s)

CONT

Bullet traps can be grouped into three broad categories, deceleration, impact, and friction, though there is some blurring of the dividing line. Deceleration traps use a circular or helical chamber to allow the bullet to spin inside until it has shed sufficient velocity to drop through a recovery port in the bottom.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Road Safety
  • Fire, Accidents, Miscellaneous Risks (Insur.)
DEF

Damage to vehicles and or equipment where no other party is involved.

CONT

The most common factors in single vehicle accidents are approaching a curve at too high speed, over-correcting and then leaving the roadway. The severity of injuries generally depends on the velocity and the impact configuration. Speed is intimately related to the risk and severity of a crash.

CONT

A motorist claimed that a dangerous condition of a public roadway was the cause of the sole vehicle accident that left her paralyzed

OBS

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sécurité routière
  • Incendies, accidents et risques divers (Assur.)
DEF

Record 9 2002-12-16

English

Subject field(s)
  • CBRNE Weapons
CONT

Direct fire projectiles are primarily designed to strike a target with a velocity high enough to achieve penetration. The chemical energy projectile uses some form of chemical heat and blast to achieve penetration. It detonates either at impact or when maximum penetration is achieved. Chemical energy projectiles carrying impact-detonated or delayed detonation high-explosive charges are used mainly for direct fire from systems with high accuracy and consistently good target acquisition ability. Tanks, antitank weapons, and automatic cannons usually use these types of projectiles.

Subject field(s)

CONT

In addition to environmental conditions during the operations on the surface of Mars the MIDD will have to be able to sustain the loads which occur prior to deployment from the lander. Since recent and currently studied designs for Mars landers in many cases use a "semi-hard" landing technique, the shock incurred during impact on the surface becomes the driver for sizing and qualification of components rather than the launch loads or the quasistatic loads during entry into the martian atmosphere. The MARS PATHFINDER lander, being the most prominent example of a semi-hard lander since it is the only one thus far having been built and flown, experienced an actual impact velocity of 18 m/s and a maximum deceleration(first bounce) of around 18 g, both values being lower than the hardware had been designed for.
