Jet dyeing is a process that can be used for batch dyeing operations such as dyeing, bleaching, washing and rinsing. In this process, dyeing is accomplished in a closed tubular system, basically composed of an impeller pump and a shallow dye bath. The fabric to be dyed is loosely collapsed in a form of a rope, and tied into a loop. The impeller pump supplies a jet of dye solution, propelled by water and/or air, to force the fabric to move through the tube into the shallow bath. Turbulence created by the jet aids in dye penetration and prevents the fabric from touching the walls of the tube, thus minimizing mechanical impact on the fabric. 1, record 6, English, - jet%20dyeing

Up to 1970, stream quality standards in the United States were largely the responsibility of individual states. The federal government became dominant in 1970 through passage of the National Environmental Policy Act which instituted the concept of environmental impact statements and established the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA). In 1972, the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments were passed which provided effluent limitation guidelines and authority to levy fines for noncompliance. This act stipulated a step-wise schedule for meeting conventional discharge criteria, the first target level by 1977 being equivalent to "best practical technology"(BPT), and the second target level by 1983 being equivalent to "best available technology economically achievable"(BAT). 4, record 24, English, - best%20available%20technology

2, record 50, French, - d%C3%A9gazage%20du%20m%C3%A9thane

Photon excitation : X-ray emission induced by the impact of charged particles other than electrons, for example alpha particles, was discovered by Chadwick in 1912. ICCE is one of the commissions of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences(IAHS). The field of interest of ICCE may be broadly defined as including the erosion, transport and deposition of sediment and the interaction of these processes with other components of the environment and with water resource development. The Commission is principally concerned with promoting improved understanding of erosion and sedimentation processes, primarily as they relate to hydrology and fluvial geomorphology, and including both mechanical and chemical denudation. It also aims to promote the study of global patterns of erosion and sediment yield and their controls and the impact of human activity on erosion and sedimentation and to encourage the development and application of new methods for investigating erosion and sediment delivery, including the use of environmental radionuclides as sediment tracers, and the implementation of novel modelling techniques. 1, record 52, English, - International%20Commission%20on%20Continental%20Erosion

This concept of retaining surface water run-off by reducing the peak water impact on the storm sewer capacity and by providing an attractive site feature, may be economical on large sites. It may also be possible to use a less expensive underground sewer system with fewer or smaller diameter pipes because the peak water impact will be collected by the retention pond instead of the sewer system. 2, record 53, English, - retention%20pond

... another possible way of creating permeability in hot dry rocks is «impact fracturing». This method... [may be described in its principle. ] A bore, cased except near the lower extremity, is surmounted by a hydraulic accumulator, filled with water and pressurized by means of a pump until the accumulator weight is lifted. The lifting pressure should be perhaps about 90% of the estimated hydro-fracturing pressure. A dynamic blow would then be struck upon the top of the water column by means of some device resembling a pile-driver, so that shock waves would travel to the base of the bore and be reflected up and down at attenuating intensity. Very high instantaneous pressures would be generated which would fracture the rock, and it is expected that the steepness of the pressure rise would be such as to resemble explosive action, so that the «star» formation... would be produced. 1, record 68, English, - impact%20fracturing

For thousands of years we have found it necessary to control water-in order to have it where we want it, when we want it. Nonetheless, some areas still suffer from drought, and some from flood. This is due partly to the natural variability of climate and partly to inappropriate land and water use. New climate seems to be changing beyond that natural variability, and this is likely to impact on the availability and distribution of water. 1, record 69, English, - Water%20%2D%20Vulnerable%20to%20Climate%20Change

(ESWL) works in something like a high-tech Ribe Goldberg sequence. The patient, usually anesthetized from the waist down to obliterate the mild discomfort of the shocks, is strapped onto a pallet and lowered into a specially designed tub full of water. X-rays reveal the precise location of the kidney stone on two television monitors. The physician pushes a button, and a spark plug at the bottom of the tank fires, vaporizing some of the water, which then creates a pressure wave. After bouncing off an elliptical brass reflector that is aimed at the patient's kidney stone, the wave passes harmlessly through the patient's tissues but creates a shattering impact when it collides with the hard stone. More than a thousand individual shocks may be required to completely break up a stone, which will wash away in the patient's urine after it disintegrates. 6, record 71, English, - extracorporeal%20shock%20wave%20lithotripter

The Advanced Houses Program, an initiative under Canada's Green Plan to reduce global warming, provides industry with the opportunity to develop and field test new products and technologies. Under the Advanced Houses Program, ten prototype homes, all winners of a national design competition, are being constructed across Canada. Each Advanced House is designed to minimize its impact on the external environment by consuming less than one-quarter the energy and one-half the water of a conventional canadian home and has a significantly better level of comfort and indoor air quality. 1, record 72, English, - Advanced%20Houses%20Program

1, record 72, French, - Programme%20de%20la%20maison%20performante

Historically, in Nova Scotia, most environmental problems are the result of small, disparate projects which cumulatively have a significant impact on the environment. Recognizing that most of these problems are a consequence of inappropriate land use, the Department has recommended to the Deputy Minister's Land Use Committee and the Planning Act Review Committee, that municipalities should be given greater authority to regulate activities within their area of jurisdiction which could affect environmental resources. Submissions made by NSDOE and other departments to the Planning Act Review Committee have suggested the need for greater municipal control over the subdivision and development of land, aggregate resource zones, and surface water for drinking supplies. 1, record 82, English, - aggregate%20resource%20zone

1, record 82, French, - zone%20aux%20ressources%20multiples

In most metallic [solar collector] systems, especially those using a number of metals or a reactive metal such as aluminum, the heat transfer fluid can have a significant impact on corrosion. In aqueous solutions, the concentration of dissolved chemicals, heavy metal ions, and pH of the fluid must be controlled. Deionized or demineralized water has been used successfully but additional steps are usually taken. These include the use of a gettering column to trap heavy metal ions before they enter critical parts of the system and inhibitors which stabilize the metal ions and reduce their reaction with less noble metals. 1, record 92, English, - gettering%20column

The application of pathology to the investigation of aviation accidents by the examination of their victims, attempting to establish both the role of disease or injury in the causation of the accident and the pathological sequelae of the accident forces. Also the distinction between those pathological processes which may be evident in the body into those which were active before the accident, those which were the result of forces acting on the body during the accident and any subsequent in-flight escape attempt, and those due to final ground or water impact. 1, record 96, English, - aviation%20pathology

2, record 96, French, - anatomie%20pathologique%20a%C3%A9ronautique
