  • Optical Instruments
  • Small Arms
DEF

When zeroing small arms, the position where the mean point of impact must be centred to achieve zero.

CONT

The correct zero position(CZP) is the corrected position of the [mean point of impact] in relation to the [point of aim] at the battle range of the weapon concerned. When a weapon is zeroed at a different range than the battle range, then an adjustment to the zero is required so that the CZP is at the [point of aim] at the battle range.

OBS

correct zero position; CZP: designations and definition officially approved by the Army Terminology Panel.

DEF

Motion picture, still photography, and video recordings showing the delivery and impact of ordnance.

CONT

Armament delivery recording... This differs from reconnaissance imagery in that it records the act of delivery and impact and normally is done by the weapon system delivering the ordnance. Armament delivery recording is used primarily for evaluating strike effectiveness and for combat crew training. It is also one of the principal sources of over-the-target documentation in force employments, and may be used for public affairs purposes.

CONT

White phosphorus(WP) is a flare-and smoke-producing incendiary weapon, or smoke-screening agent, made from a common allotrope of the chemical element phosphorus. White phosphorus bombs and shells are incendiary devices, but can also be used as an offensive anti-personnel flame compound capable of causing serious burns or death. The agent is used in bombs, artillery shells, and mortar shells which burst into burning flakes of phosphorus upon impact. White phosphorus is commonly referred to in military jargon as "WP". The Vietnam-era slang "Willy(ie) Pete" or "Willy(ie) Peter" is still occasionally heard.

OBS

The format of what would become the Shearwater International Air Show or SIAS began to crystallize in 1981. Obviously, it could not compete with bigger shows playing to larger population centres. So, if the biggest was not possible, SIAS aimed to be the best. The show's search for excellence was rewarded by many successes; air displays equaling any in the country and over 75 different static aircraft from as many as seven countries. In addition, over 80 high-quality ground exhibits were displayed, including such as an Iraqi Scud missile and the weapon which brought it down, the US Army's Patriot System. Efforts to raise the Nova Scotia International Air Show(NSIAS) from the ashes were unsuccessful in 1996, but a few dedicated believers took on the task to try again for 1997 and were more than rewarded for their efforts. NSIAS 97 was a co-production of the three levels of government, the private sector and the military in the Atlantic Region. A lot of hard work, negotiations and good will produced a first class show that had all the trade marks of past SIAS events and then some. With a superb two-day attendance and an overall economic impact exceeding 14 million dollars, Shearwater and Nova Scotia were clearly on the air show map.

OBS

The non-simultaneous, uncontrolled and highly irregular detonation of all or some of the HE [high explosive] components of nuclear weapons. Such erratic HE detonation, resulting from impact shocks or exposure to fires, lacks the squeeze or implosion necessary to produce a nuclear yield detonation. The term implies the normal consequence of exposure of nuclear weapons to impacts or fire, namely, a detonation of a portion of the HE content of the weapon, in turn resulting in a scattering of the remaining HE as well as the fissile material.

Key term(s)
  • one point detonation

French

Domaine(s)

OBS
