Heap leaching is often the most cost-effective way to extract value from gold or copper ores. Heap leaching involves placing ore-grade material on an impermeable liner foundation with a solution collection system of drainpipes and irrigating the surface with either cyanide solution(for gold) or acid(for copper). Within the heap, chemical reactions occur which liberate the payable metal from the rock. The resultant solution, called pregnant leach solution(PLS), reaches the liner and the collection pipes, and then reports to a storage facility(pond) for processing where the metal is removed, the solution conditioned, and re-applied to the HLP [heap leach pad] as barren leach solution(BLS). 1, record 1, English, - barren%20leach%20solution

Geomembranes are very low permeability membrane liners and barriers used with any geotechnical engineering based material so as to control fluid migration in a man-made project, structure or system. 2, record 5, English, - geomembrane
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Geomembrane: The term liner applies when a geomembrane is used as an interface or a surface revetment. The term barrier is usually reserved for the cases where the geomembrane is used inside an earth mass. Geomembrane is a generic term which has been proposed to replace many terms such as: synthetic membranes, polymeric membranes, plastic liners, flexible membrane liners, impermeable membranes and impervious sheets. These terms are not appropriate because: (i) synthetic, polymeric and plastic are too restrictive; (ii) geomembranes are not always used as liners; (iii) flexible membrane is redundant; and (iv) no material is absolutely impermeable or impervious. In addition, many users for these materials habitually designate them with trade names, which adds to the terminology confusion. Geomembranes should not be confused with other similar membranes used for such applications as single-ply roofing, floating covers and air supported roof. Also, geomembranes should not be confused with geotextiles [which are permeable by construction]. 2, record 5, English, - geomembrane
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 2 OBS
Liquid containment (pond) liners. Undoubtedly the largest single use of geomembranes is in the area of liquid containment. In fact, the name "geomembranes" is actually one that supersedes the name "pond liner," reflecting the original use of the plastic and rubber materials ... 3, record 5, English, - geomembrane

Natural gas is most commonly stored under pressure in three different types of underground facilities. The most common type of storage facility is depleted oil and natural gas fields. There are only four basic kinds of stratigraphic traps: unconformities, porosity permeability pinchouts, reefs, and drape structures. ... Reef Traps. Reefs are productive in many parts of the world. Many types exist, such as atolls, table reefs, pinnacle reefs, barrier reefs, fringing reefs, biostromes, and bioherms. They occur as small dome like features that may be reflected in the overlying sediments by drape. ... The size of a reef ranges from a few acres to several square miles. Seismic exploration is the best way to find reefs. The reef core grows upward and usually outward as the sea level rises. Detrital reef material falls on the ocean side, forming the fore reef. The back reef is formed on the lagoon or quiet side by deposition of limestone and lime mud ... 1, record 15, English, - reef%20trap

Stratigraphic traps are traps created by the limits of the reservoir rock itself, without any structural control.... Stratigraphic reef traps are amongst the most important type of trap in Alberta, where reefs of Devonian age, formed mainly of stromatoporoids host much of the petroleum. They became ideal traps when a change in the regional environment caused the reefs to be buried by muds, forming an impermeable seal and cap rock. 2, record 15, English, - reef%20trap
