Au XXe siècle, le nom d'astrolabe à prisme fut donné à des appareils destinés à déterminer des positions d'étoiles. Le plus connu a été l'astrolabe de Claude et Driencourt. Le principe a été repris par Danjon dans son astrolabe moderne. Utilisé par l'observatoire de Paris depuis 1952, cet instrument s'est révélé être un instrument précis et exempt d'erreurs subjectives d'observation (astrolabe impersonnel).
