Geomembrane : The term liner applies when a geomembrane is used as an interface or a surface revetment. The term barrier is usually reserved for the cases where the geomembrane is used inside an earth mass. Geomembrane is a generic term which has been proposed to replace many terms such as : synthetic membranes, polymeric membranes, plastic liners, flexible membrane liners, impermeable membranes and impervious sheets. These terms are not appropriate because :(i) synthetic, polymeric and plastic are too restrictive;(ii) geomembranes are not always used as liners;(iii) flexible membrane is redundant; and(iv) no material is absolutely impermeable or impervious. In addition, many users for these materials habitually designate them with trade names, which adds to the terminology confusion. Geomembranes should not be confused with other similar membranes used for such applications as single-ply roofing, floating covers and air supported roof. Also, geomembranes should not be confused with geotextiles [which are permeable by construction].

A totally new type of press was introduced in 1981. The "Extended-Nip Press" features a very wide nip to give the sheet a long dwell time at high pressure. When used as the last nip, this press provides not only a much drier sheet, but also a stronger sheet due to improved consolidation of the web structure.... Key components are the stationary pressure shoe and the impervious elastomer belt, which form the bottom portion of the double-felted nip. The shoe is continuously lubricated by oil to act as a slip bearing for the belt.

It has been suggested ... that since the thinnest layer of sand to act successfully as an erosion pumping filter was 25 mm, and the slurry penetrated /3mm in this case, then a geotextile with a thickness of 10 mm or more might successfully replace the sand blanket layer. The fact that the most successful sand blanket have voids ranging from 5 to 30 [micrometers] seems to suggest that the geotextile’s voids should be of a similar magnitude. Erosion pumping filters, using a geotextile in conjunction with a sand blanket, are much more effective than geotextiles alone.

The Weigand card contains a series of parallel wires embedded in the bottom half of the card. The wire is a specially treated ferromagnetic wire which produces a sudden change in magnetic flux when exposed to a slow changing magnetic field. Each wire in the badge can be assigned a logic "0" or "1" by placing it in the proper position relative to the resetting magnets and sensing coils in the card reader. This type of badge is impervious to accidental erasure and it is difficult to alter or duplicate.(Protection of Assets Manual, volume 1, section 8-27.) Cost is approximately $6. 00 each.

Geomembranes are very low permeability membrane liners and barriers used with any geotechnical engineering based material so as to control fluid migrations in a man-made project, structure or system. The term liner applies when a geomembrane is used as an interface or a surface revetment. The term barrier is usually reserved for the cases where the geomembrane is used inside an earth mass. Geomembrane is a generic term which has been proposed to replace many terms such as : synthetic membranes, polymeric membranes, plastic liners, flexible membrane liners, impermeable membranes and impervious sheets.

Performance of geomembrane-lined facilities used for waste disposal and liquid storage is analyzed, providing a check-list of failure mechanisms and guidelines for prevention. Approximately thirty such facilities exhibiting various mechanisms of failures were investigated by the author. Failure is characterized by leakage or large liner displacement hampering operation of the facility.
