The Dental Division of the Primary Health Care and Public Health Directorate(PHCPHD) strives to improve, and ultimately to maintain, the oral health of the First Nations and Inuit at a level comparable to other Canadians. The Dental Division's efforts include the delivery and/or management of a broad range of oral health activities including proactive disease prevention, oral health promotion and dental treatment services provided by regional dental therapists and other First Nations and Inuit Health Branch(FNIHB) staff, as well as the staff of many First Nations. The key focus areas for the Dental Division are : Supporting the regional delivery of the dental therapy program; Managing the contract for the delivery of the National School of Dental Therapy(NSDT) training program by the First Nations University of Canada. Currently, 106 dental therapists from NSDT work either directly for First Nations and Inuit Health Branch(FNIHB) or directly for First Nations or territorial governments in the Regions and Territories and serve approximately 170 First Nations and Inuit communities. They are the key providers for FNIHB oral health initiatives. In addition to the services provided by dental therapists, Health Canada also pays for dental practitioner services for specified clinical services in First Nations and Inuit communities. The Public Affairs and Strategic Communications Directorate is the departmental focal point for strategic advice, planning and implementation of communications. The Materiel and Assets Management Directorate(MAMD) provides leadership, management services and functional direction to Health Canada's materiel management community in support of program activities. These services include : procurement and contracting; the provision of a Contract, Requisition and Reporting System and related controls and approval processes; fleet management; assets management and inventory control; investment planning; and, materiel policy development and training, as well as contract and asset data reporting. MAMD is responsible for providing leadership in the development and implementation of accountability and process initiatives emanating from central agencies that affect contract and assets management in Health Canada. La Direction de la gestion du matériel et des biens (DGMB) assure un leadership et fournit des services de gestion et une orientation fonctionnelle aux responsables de l'approvisionnement de Santé Canada afin de les aider dans leurs activités. La DGMB est aussi chargée de jouer un rôle de chef de file dans l'établissement et la mise en œuvre de l'initiative de réforme des modes d'approvisionnement de Marché en direct du gouvernement du Canada, initiative qui est dirigée par Travaux publics et Services gouvernementaux Canada (TPSGC) et qui vise à trouver des moyens novateurs d'acquérir des biens et des services à un prix réduit. The Communicable Disease Control Division(CDCD) was staffed in April 2003 within the Primary Health Care and Public Health Directorate(PHCPHD) to bring a focus to communicable diseases(CD), in particular, Tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and Vaccine-Preventable Diseases. The division will continue to improve its capacity to better address other communicable disease issues, including hepatitis C, sexually transmitted illnesses, enteric diseases, and other emerging diseases within the First Nations and Inuit communities. The CDCD is responsible for : Providing national coordination for current CD programmes : Airborne diseases(Tuberculosis Elimination Strategy) Communicable disease health emergencies(Pandemic Influenza) Blood-borne Diseases and Sexually Transmitted Infections(HIV/AIDS Program) Vaccine-Preventable Diseases(Targeted Immunization Strategy) Assuring core human resource and expert capacity to deal with other CD issues. Supporting the Regions in the implementation of the programmes. Since 2003, the CDCD of the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch(FNIHB) has commissioned independent analyses and conducted internal reviews of the Public Health requirements and capacities of the branch and the populations it serves. Depuis 2003, la Division du contrôle des maladies transmissibles de la Direction générale de la santé des Premières nations et des Inuits (DGSPNI) a commandé des analyses indépendantes et a mené des examens internes des besoins et des capacités en matière de santé publique de la DGSPNI et des populations qu'elle sert. The Aboriginal Healing and Wellness Strategy(AHWS) supports a comprehensive approach to reducing family violence in First Nations and Aboriginal communities and improving the health of Aboriginal people who live on or off reserves. The Strategy enables Aboriginal communities to address family violence and health service needs, through the integration of traditional Aboriginal teachings and mainstream health services and interventions. The AHWS is an inter-ministerial initiative, jointly managed by the Ministry of Community and Social Services, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, the Ontario Native Affairs Secretariat, Ontario Women's Directorate, and 15 Aboriginal organizations and First Nations.
