CONT

The gastrointestinal(GI) tract of mammals is home to a large number and high diversity of microorganisms, including bacteria, archaea, viruses, and fungi, which together build a complex micro-ecosystem and shape the host's physiology[. Many] studies have focused on the role of bacteria in the gut microbiome while overlooking the intestinal fungi, partly because of the low abundance of the latter, as they account for only 0. 01–0. 1% of the whole community... However, accumulating evidence suggests that the fungal community, also referred to as the mycobiota, is indeed an important member of the microbiota, thereby requiring detailed characterization... the gut mycobiota has also been implicated in various pathologies, particularly in intestinal inflammation and infection.

As a general rule of Canadian evidence law, the previous out-of-court statements of a witness or victim are not to be the subject of testimony in court. In regard to statements by a child who is not called as a witness, any statements made by the child to others would normally be regarded as hearsay and therefore inadmissible. Although the general rules about the exclusion of previous consistent statements and hearsay are basically sound, they can be problematic when applied to cases involving children who are victims of abuse. Not infrequently in child abuse cases, the initial disclosures of abuse by the child to a parent or another trusted person are graphic and highly revealing. Conversely, if the accused argues that a child has been subject to improper coaching or interviewing to make the allegations, [an] inquiry into the circumstances in which the allegations were first made can be vitally important. As a result of these types of concerns Canadian judges have significantly liberalized the rules about admitting this type of evidence, making changes to the common law that in some other countries have been achieved by legislative reforms.

One of the most important and practical applications of the emerging understanding of the role of cycles in biology is the treatment of diseases. The abnormalities associated with virtually every disease-from allergy, arthritis and asthma to cardiovascular disease and cancer-are themselves organized cyclically and, in particular, along circadian lines. The treatment of such illnesses according to daily rhythms is commonly referred to as chronotherapy.... A growing body of evidence suggests that therapy could be improved and toxicity reduced by administering drugs at carefully selected times of day.

CONT

Chronotherapy offers a new perspective for the non-surgical treatment of breast carcinomata since it takes into account any (synchronized) rhythmic changes in the neoplastic tissue (e.g. circadian on the one hand, and also rhythms in the host’s tolerance of treatment, e.g. x-radiation, on the other.

Enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of urea to ammonia and carbon dioxide.

CONT

It was therefore a major landmark in the history of enzyme research when, in 1897, Eduard Buchner succeeded in extracting from yeast cells that enzymes catalyzing alcoholic fermentation. This achievement clearly demonstrated that these important enzymes, which catalyze a major energy-yielding metabolic pathway, can function independently of cell structure. However, it was not until many years later that an enzyme was first isolated in pure crystalline form. This was accomplished by J. B. Sumner in 1926 for the enzyme urease isolated from extracts of the jack bean. Sumner presented evidence that the crystals consist of protein, and he concluded, contrary to prevailing opinion, that enzymes are proteins.

CONT

Another soil process, which is of importance to subsea pipeline engineering, is dynamic liquefaction caused either due to the passing of individual(steep) waves or due to a gradual build-up of pore pressure in the soil due to repeated cyclical forcing, such as wave motion. As a consequence of liquefaction the soil loses its bearing capacity. Hence, a negatively buoyant pipe will sink into the seabed, but what is usually worse is that a buoyant pipe can work its way out of the seabed with potentially hazardous consequences. Although dynamic liquefaction has been studied for more than 20 years, we are still some ways from formulating clear design rules, partially because it is still not clear how important this effect is in the field; the evidence is contradictory.

Plot that shows the pH activity relationship for a particular enzyme. Most enzymes have a characteristic pH at which their activity is maximal; above or below this pH the activity declines. Although the profiles of many enzymes are bell-shaped, they may vary considerably in form. Bell-shaped profiles with neutral substrates have often been interpreted as evidence that two ionizing groups of the enzyme are important in the catalytic reaction.

CONT

The previous discussion would suggest that all perturbations in the pH profile are characterized by a broadening or displacement of the profile towards acid or alkaline values. However pH profiles have been observed where both limbs are broadened, thus the effective rate of the enzyme becomes less sensitive to pH changes when it is immobilized. Such an effect can occur when neither proton partitioning nor diffusion limitation is present and is due to substrate diffusion limitation. An immobilized enzyme preparation that has a high enzyme loading (that is a large quantity of enzyme activity per unit of polymer) may be subject to substrate diffusion limitation.

But imply that the emotions play an important role in people's ability to resist or recover from diseases such as cancer-or even the common cold-and things get controversial. Just a decade ago, all but a handful of researchers rejected the idea completely. Now a group of scientists in a new discipline known as psychoimmunology are collecting intriguing evidence that the mind does directly influence the body's disease-fighting immune system. Recent studies are gaining converts, even though the discipline remains an uneasy alliance of psychologists and biologists. "The field is new, complex, and sticky", says Barry Flint, director of the Institute for the Advanced of Health, a New York group that promotes psychoimmunology research.(Source : Vocable/Business Week, 3 Feb. 1986).
