The term "rapid" is relative to the time taken by the phreatic surface in the embankment to follow the falling level in the reservoir, which may take several weeks or even months, being dependent on the permeability of the material forming the embankment.

Nous avons indiqué quatre digues en France et une aux États-Unis qui ont subi des désordres sur la face amont à la suite d'un abaissement brusque du plan d'eau dans la retenue. Actuellement, on prend des dispositions d'ailleurs simples pour éviter dans ce cas, que les sous-pressions ne viennent à réduire la stabilité. On charge la face amont avec des matériaux perméables qui se drainent instantanément. Lorsqu'on abaisse le plan d'eau, même si le noyau étanche ne se draine pas, c'est-à-dire s'il reste une pression interstitielle correspondant approximativement à la charge totale avant vidange, les recharges perméables ne subissant plus la poussée d'Archimède viennent appliquer sur le noyau une charge qui augmente brusquement du poids de l'eau déplacée, c'est-à-dire de une tonne par m³. On trouve là un élément très favorable à la stabilité de l'ouvrage.
